Streamlight TLR Series: The Duty Pistol Light Standard
The TLR-1 HL is Streamlight's flagship full-size weapon light — 1,000 lumens, CR123A battery, Picatinny/Glock MIL-STD rail mount, and ambidextrous momentary/constant-on switch. It is the most widely issued pistol light in American law enforcement. The TLR-7 and TLR-7A are compact versions sized for pistols with shorter rail sections — 500 lumens in a smaller package compatible with compact carry guns like the Glock 19, Sig P365 XL, and Springfield Hellcat Pro. The TLR-8 adds an integrated red or green laser to the TLR-7 platform, providing both illumination and aiming in a single unit — a popular choice for home defense pistols where a laser aids quick target acquisition without raising the firearm to eye level. For full-size duty pistols: TLR-1 HL. For compact carry pistols: TLR-7. For laser/light combo: TLR-8.
TLR-7 Sub: The Micro-Compact Solution
The TLR-7 Sub is Streamlight's answer to the growing micro-compact pistol market — a purpose-built weapon light for pistols like the Sig P365, Glock 43X, and Springfield Hellcat that have short rail sections incompatible with standard TLR-7 mounting. The TLR-7 Sub uses a proprietary mount specific to each pistol model, ensuring a secure, rattle-free fit on sub-compact slides. At 500 lumens in an extremely compact housing, the TLR-7 Sub delivers meaningful illumination without significantly altering the pistol's carry profile. When ordering, confirm compatibility with your specific pistol model — the TLR-7 Sub mounts are pistol-specific.
Streamlight ProTac Series: Tactical Handheld Flashlights
The ProTac series covers Streamlight's handheld tactical flashlight lineup. The ProTac HL-X is the flagship — 1,000 lumens from a single CR123A or AA battery, a tail-cap switch with programmable modes, and a machined aluminum body rated for hard use. The ProTac 2L-X delivers similar output in a slightly more compact format popular with law enforcement for duty carry. All ProTac lights feature Streamlight's Ten-Tap programming, allowing the user to select between multiple output modes and switch behavior via a programmed sequence. For general everyday carry, the ProTac 1L-1AA is one of the most versatile options — runs on either a CR123A or AA battery, providing flexibility in the field when one battery type isn't available.
Streamlight for Rifles and Long Guns
The Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount series brings the ProTac platform to rifle applications — Picatinny-mounted weapon lights for AR-15s, shotguns, and other long guns. The ProTac Rail Mount 1 and 2 deliver 350–625 lumens in a remote-switch-compatible housing that integrates cleanly with AR-15 handguards. For home defense carbines and shotguns, a dedicated rifle-mount light is significantly more practical than a handheld. The ProTac Rail Mount lights are pressure-switch compatible, allowing activation without breaking grip. See our weapon mounted lights page for the full rifle light selection.
Streamlight vs. SureFire: Choosing Between the Top Two
Streamlight and SureFire are the two dominant weapon light brands in law enforcement and military use. SureFire pioneered the category and maintains its reputation for absolute reliability in the most demanding conditions — their X300 Ultra is the benchmark against which other pistol lights are compared. Streamlight offers comparable performance at a lower price point; the TLR-1 HL consistently outperforms its cost in independent testing and has earned a strong track record in law enforcement. For most civilian home defense and carry applications, the Streamlight TLR-1 HL or TLR-7 delivers everything you need. For duty use where budget is less constrained and absolute reliability is non-negotiable, SureFire's X300 Ultra is worth the premium. Both carry comprehensive warranties and are fully serviceable.
Battery Guide: CR123A vs. AA for Tactical Lights
CR123A lithium batteries are the standard for high-output weapon lights — they deliver more energy per unit of volume than AA batteries, enabling the compact housings of lights like the TLR-1 HL and TLR-7. CR123A batteries have a 10-year shelf life, making them ideal for lights that sit unused in a home defense pistol for extended periods. Keep a supply of fresh CR123A batteries for any weapon light used in a defensive role. AA-compatible lights (ProTac 1L-1AA) are valuable for field use where CR123A batteries may be difficult to source. Replace weapon light batteries annually regardless of use — a discharged weapon light in an emergency is as useless as no light at all.
Streamlight Headlamps
Streamlight's Bandit and Enduro headlamp series cover hands-free lighting for hunting, camping, and field use. The Bandit Pro is a USB-rechargeable headlamp with 180 lumens and a red mode for preserving night vision during hunting — practical for early-morning or late-evening setups where white light would alert game. The Enduro series offers longer burn times on AAA batteries for extended overnight use. For hunters who spend significant time in the field at dawn and dusk, a quality headlamp is as important as any other piece of gear.
