6.8mm SPC Ammo
The 6.8 SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge) was developed jointly by Remington and U.S. Army Special Forces as a direct improvement over 5.56 NATO for close-quarters and intermediate-range engagements. It launches .277-caliber bullets at 2,550–2,800 fps from a 16” barrel — delivering substantially more energy than 5.56 while fitting in a standard AR-15 lower with only a barrel, bolt, and magazine change. The 6.8 SPC excels as a hunting cartridge for deer and hogs inside 300 yards, and remains popular with AR-15 hunters who want a meaningful performance upgrade over 5.56 without moving to a larger platform.

6.8 SPC vs. 5.56 NATO: The Performance Upgrade Case
The 6.8 SPC delivers roughly 40% more muzzle energy than standard 5.56 NATO at the same barrel length — a 115-grain 6.8 SPC at 2,625 fps produces about 1,760 ft-lbs versus approximately 1,260 ft-lbs for a 62-grain 5.56 load. More meaningfully, the 6.8 SPC retains energy better at distance and uses larger, heavier bullets that are generally more effective on game and barriers. For hunting applications, the difference is significant — 5.56 is marginal for deer in many conditions; the 6.8 SPC is a proper deer cartridge. The conversion requires only a new upper assembly, bolt, and magazines.
6.8 SPC vs. 6.5 Grendel: Which AR-15 Upgrade Should You Choose?
These two cartridges are the most popular AR-15 performance upgrades and serve different purposes. The 6.8 SPC prioritizes close-to-intermediate range energy and is better suited for hunting inside 300 yards where terminal performance matters most. The 6.5 Grendel prioritizes long-range ballistic efficiency with a higher BC bullet that performs better past 300 yards. For hog and deer hunters in timber or mixed terrain, the 6.8 SPC’s heavier close-range impact is often preferable. For open-country hunting or long-range target shooting, the 6.5 Grendel is the superior cartridge.
6.8 SPC Hunting Applications: Deer, Hogs, and Predators
The 6.8 SPC is an excellent deer and hog cartridge inside 250 yards. A 110–115 grain soft-point or polymer-tip load at 2,650 fps delivers adequate penetration and expansion for clean kills on deer-sized game. For hogs, the heavier 120-grain loads provide more penetration through tough hide and shoulder bone. At varmint distances, lighter 85–90 grain loads at higher velocity are effective on coyotes and similar predators. Most 6.8 SPC factory loads are optimized for the 16” AR-15 barrel — the cartridge performs best in that barrel length and loses meaningful velocity in shorter pistol-length barrels.
6.8 SPC II vs. Original 6.8 SPC: Chamber Difference Explained
The original 6.8 SPC chamber was tightened for accuracy at the expense of feeding reliability in semi-automatic platforms. The 6.8 SPC II chamber (developed by SSA/Silver State Armory) is slightly larger, improving feeding reliability in AR-15s at a negligible accuracy cost. Most modern 6.8 SPC AR-15 barrels use the SPC II chamber. Factory ammunition runs safely in both chambers — but if you’re building or buying a 6.8 SPC AR, confirm the barrel uses a SPC II chamber for best results. This is a moot point for most factory rifle buyers as most manufacturers have standardized on SPC II.
Best 6.8 SPC Ammunition Brands
Hornady produces 6.8 SPC in their American Gunner and Varmint Express lines; Federal loads it in their Fusion line for hunting; Remington (as the original developer) offers several loads. American Eagle and Silver State Armory round out the major options. The 110-grain Hornady V-MAX is a popular all-around load for predators and varmints; the 115-grain Federal Fusion or Hornady SST are the top picks for deer hunting. Availability has improved significantly since the cartridge’s early years and most online retailers stock it consistently.
