50 BMG Ammo

The .50 BMG—Browning Machine Gun—is the most powerful cartridge commonly available to civilian shooters, originally designed for heavy machine guns and now chambered in semi-automatic rifles like the Barrett M82 and M107. It pushes a 650–750 grain bullet to over 2,700 fps, with energy levels that support accurate engagement well past 1,000 yards. We carry ball, match-grade, and specialty .50 BMG loads for all legal civilian applications from manufacturers including Barrett, Federal, and Hornady.

Ballistics and Effective Range

A standard 660-grain ball load leaves a 29-inch barrel at approximately 2,700 fps, retaining supersonic velocity well past 1,500 yards. Match-grade loads like the Hornady A-MAX in 750 grain are capable of sub-MOA groups in quality rifles at 1,000 yards and beyond. The cartridge’s high ballistic coefficient and heavy bullet weight make it relatively resistant to wind drift at long range compared to smaller, lighter calibers—a significant practical advantage when shooting past 600 yards.

Ball vs. Match-Grade

Standard ball (FMJ) .50 BMG is the most affordable and widely available option—suitable for range use and semi-auto platforms where consistency matters less than cost. Match-grade loads use tighter tolerances, premium projectiles, and more consistent propellant charges, resulting in meaningfully better accuracy from precision bolt-action and single-shot platforms. For a Barrett M82 and range use, ball is fine. For precision work past 500 yards, match grade is worth the premium.

Compatible Platforms

Common civilian .50 BMG platforms include the Barrett M82A1, M107A1, MRAD, and 99 series; the Serbu BFG-50; and bolt-action designs from McMillan, Accuracy International, and others. Barrett semi-automatic platforms accept standard .50 BMG NATO and most commercial loads without issue. Bolt-action platforms may have specific overall length requirements—check your rifle’s specifications before ordering specialty or extended-length match loads.

Recoil and Shooting Considerations

The .50 BMG produces significant felt recoil even from heavy platforms. Barrett’s long-recoil operating system manages it effectively, and a muzzle brake is standard equipment on most civilian .50 BMG rifles—without one, the cartridge would be punishing. Hearing protection is essential, and eye protection is strongly recommended due to muzzle blast. Most .50 BMG shooting is done from a bench or prone position.

Pricing and Availability

The .50 BMG is among the most expensive commonly available rifle calibers, typically running $3–$7 per round for ball and $8–$15+ for match-grade loads. Surplus military ammunition is available periodically at lower prices but may have quality inconsistencies. Buying in bulk—cans of 100–200 rounds—is the standard approach. Availability fluctuates with demand and surplus cycles; ordering ahead is advisable if you have a specific range session planned.
