What Is an AK-47 Shotgun?
AK-pattern shotguns are semi-automatic 12 gauge shotguns built on the AK platform with detachable box magazines instead of a traditional tube magazine. The most famous example is the Russian Saiga-12, which spawned a generation of AK-style shotguns. Today’s best options — JTS M12AK, Kalashnikov Komrad, and others — offer excellent reliability in a package that anyone familiar with AK rifles can operate immediately.
Standard AK Shotguns vs. NFA Configurations
Standard AK shotguns (18"+ barrel) — No NFA registration required. The JTS M12AK with its 18.7" barrel is our most popular AK shotgun and represents excellent value — reliable, affordable, and legal in most states without paperwork.
NFA AK shotguns (under 18" barrel) — Shotguns with barrels under 18 inches are classified as Short Barrel Shotguns (SBS) under the NFA and require a $200 tax stamp and ATF approval. The Kalashnikov Komrad with its 12.5" barrel falls into this category — outstanding capability but requires NFA registration.
