Platform Compatibility: There Is No Standard

Unlike AR-15 magazines, shotgun magazines do not interchange between platforms. VR80/VR60 mags fit Rock Island VRs; Saiga and Vepr mags are distinct from each other despite shared AK heritage; JTS M12AK and M12AR take different magazines from the same maker; Citadel Boss-25 uses its own pattern. Buy magazines listed explicitly for your model — “12 gauge AK style” in a listing title is not a fitment guarantee. When in doubt, the factory magazine is the reference standard.

Box Magazines: 5, 10, and 19+ Rounds

Five-round boxes are the field and hunting standard — compact, reliable, and legal for hunting where magazine limits apply. Ten-round magazines are the practical ceiling for most platforms, balancing capacity against the considerable length of stacked 12-gauge shells (a 10-round shotgun box approaches the size of a 40-round rifle mag). Steel-body magazines tolerate abuse better; polymer saves meaningful weight at these sizes.

Drum Magazines

Drums push mag-fed shotguns to 20+ rounds for competition and range entertainment, at the cost of weight, bulk, and pickier feeding. Quality drums for Saiga and VR-pattern guns run reliably with full-power loads; light target loads are the common failure point in any drum. Ammo Sensitivity in Mag-Fed Shotguns

Magazine-fed shotguns are notoriously ammunition-sensitive: shell length, hull material, and brass height all affect feeding from a box. Most platforms feed 2-3/4” full-power loads best; cheap promotional target loads cause the majority of malfunctions blamed on magazines.
