Key New Jersey Firearms Laws
New Jersey requires a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPIC) to purchase rifles and shotguns, and a separate Permit to Purchase a Handgun for each handgun transaction. Permits to purchase a handgun are obtained through your local police department and are valid for 90 days. The FPIC has no expiration date once issued.
Assault Weapons Ban
New Jersey prohibits semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines that have any prohibited feature (pistol grip, thumbhole stock, folding stock, flash suppressor, grenade launcher). New Jersey’s law is stricter than the old federal AWB — it uses a one-feature test. Compliant options include featureless rifles with a fixed magazine or NJ-legal furniture. All rifles in this category are NJ-compliant.
Magazine Capacity
New Jersey prohibits magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. All magazines we ship to NJ addresses are 10-round compliant. This applies to both handgun and rifle magazines.
Handgun Roster
Unlike California and Massachusetts, New Jersey does not maintain a handgun roster. Any handgun legal under federal law can be sold in New Jersey, provided the buyer has a valid Permit to Purchase a Handgun for that transaction.
The Transfer Process
All online purchases ship to a New Jersey-licensed FFL dealer. New Jersey has a 7-day waiting period on all handgun purchases. You must present your valid FPIC or Permit to Purchase at time of transfer. Transfer fees typically run $25–$50. Verify your dealer accepts out-of-state online transfers before ordering.
