Optics for Handguns

Handgun optics fall into two distinct categories: miniature red dots and reflex sights for carry and competition pistols, and long-eye-relief pistol scopes for hunting revolvers. Red dots like the Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507K, and Sig Romeo1 mount directly to optics-ready slides and are the standard for duty, carry, and competitive shooting. Pistol scopes from Burris, Leupold, and similar manufacturers use 12–24” of eye relief for shooting at arm’s length and are purpose-built for powerful revolvers used in handgun hunting.

Red Dots vs. Pistol Scopes: Two Different Products

A red dot sight for a carry or duty pistol is a miniature reflex optic with no magnification — it places a dot on a small window for fast target acquisition at typical defensive distances of 3–25 yards. A pistol scope is a magnified optic with dramatically extended eye relief (12–24”) designed for handgun hunting at 50–150 yards. Using a rifle scope on a handgun is dangerous — rifle scopes have 3–4” of eye relief, which puts the ocular lens in the path of recoil and can cause serious eye injury. Always match the optic type to the intended use: red dot for carry and competition, pistol scope for hunting revolvers.

Red Dot and Reflex Sights for Carry Pistols

The most widely used carry red dots are the Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507K, and Shield RMSc. The RMR is the gold standard for duty use — its aluminum housing and proven drop and impact resistance make it the most validated carry red dot on the market. The Holosun 507K offers comparable features at a lower price point with solar backup power. The Shield RMSc uses the smallest footprint of any carry red dot and fits micro-compact pistols where the RMR is too large. For optics-ready slides, confirm your pistol’s specific footprint before ordering — most modern optics-ready pistols use RMR, Shield RMSc, or Leupold DeltaPoint Pro footprints, and these are not interchangeable without adapter plates.

Full-Size Competition Red Dots

Competition shooters prioritize a large window and bright dot over compact carry dimensions. The Holosun 510C’s large square window and the Trijicon SRO’s wide circular window provide faster target acquisition on a competition stage than the smaller carry red dots. The Leupold DeltaPoint Pro is popular in USPSA and IDPA for its wide field of view and reliable battery life. For competition pistols mounted on full-size frames where snag-free carry profile is irrelevant, these larger optics are the better choice over compact carry red dots.

Pistol Scopes for Handgun Hunting

Dedicated pistol scopes from Burris (HandgunScope), Leupold (FX-II Handgun), and Nikon are designed with 12–24” of eye relief for extended-arm shooting. A 2x–4x magnification is appropriate for most handgun hunting at 50–100 yards — enough to identify targets and place accurate shots at distance without over-magnifying the sight picture.
