The ATF eForms system is the online portal for filing National Firearms Act (NFA) paperwork electronically — replacing the paper-based process for registering suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and other NFA items. As of January 1, 2026, the $200 NFA tax stamp fee has been eliminated, making eForms registration free for qualifying items. This guide covers how eForms works, which forms apply to which transactions, and what to expect during the registration process at Impact Guns.
What ATF eForms Is and Why It Matters
The ATF eForms system (eforms.atf.gov) allows individuals, dealers, and manufacturers to submit NFA forms electronically rather than through paper mail. Electronic submission dramatically reduces processing times compared to paper — Form 4 transfers that previously took 12–18 months by mail have processed in days to weeks via eForms when the system is running efficiently. For buyers of NFA items like suppressors and SBRs, eForms is the primary pathway to completing the registration process in a reasonable timeframe.
Key Forms: Form 4, Form 1, and Form 3
ATF Form 4 (Application for Tax Paid Transfer) is the most commonly filed form — it covers the transfer of a registered NFA item from a dealer or manufacturer to an individual or trust. This is what is filed when you purchase a suppressor or registered SBR from Impact Guns. With the elimination of the $200 tax stamp in 2026, Form 4 transfers are now filed without a tax payment. ATF Form 1 (Application to Make and Register a Firearm) covers individuals who want to manufacture an NFA item — most commonly used when converting a pistol to an SBR by adding a stock, or building a suppressor. The Form 1 is submitted before manufacturing occurs. ATF Form 3 (Tax-Exempt Transfer Between FFL/SOT) is the dealer-to-dealer transfer form used when a suppressor or NFA item moves between licensed dealers — your dealer handles this, not you as the buyer.
How to File a Form 4 via eForms
To file a Form 4 electronically: create an account at eforms.atf.gov, provide your personal information and address, submit passport-style photos and fingerprints electronically via the system, and include your responsible person information if filing as a trust. Your dealer initiates the transfer from their side and links it to your submitted application. After submission you receive a confirmation number for status tracking. The item stays at your dealer during the approval period and is only transferred to you when approval is received.
Individual vs. Trust Registration
NFA items can be registered to an individual or to a legal trust. Individual registration is simpler — one person is the registered owner. Trust registration allows multiple "responsible persons" to legally possess and use the NFA item without the owner being present, which is useful for households where multiple people may need access to a suppressor or SBR. For most single buyers, an individual Form 4 is the simplest path. For families or households where multiple people will use the item, a trust is worth the modest additional setup cost. NFA trusts are straightforward documents — many attorneys and online services prepare them for $50–$200.
The January 2026 Tax Stamp Elimination: What Changed
The $200 NFA tax stamp was eliminated effective January 1, 2026. The Form 4 transfer process still exists and ATF approval is still required before taking possession of any NFA item — the elimination removed the tax payment, not the registration requirement itself. Suppressors, SBRs, and other NFA items still require an approved Form 4 before transfer. The eForms system continues to be the primary submission pathway; the only change is that the $200 tax payment step no longer applies.
Processing Times and Status Checks
ATF eForms processing times are published on the ATF website and updated periodically. After submission, check your application status at eforms.atf.gov using your confirmation number. The ATF also sends email updates when your application status changes. Processing times vary based on application volume — periods of high submission volume following regulatory changes can extend wait times. If your application has been pending significantly longer than the published average, your Impact Guns sales associate can contact the ATF NFA Branch on your behalf for a status inquiry.
