Plate Carriers
A plate carrier is the foundation of any serious personal protection setup — providing a platform to run hard armor plates, MOLLE accessories, and magazine pouches in a low-profile or full-coverage configuration. We stock a range of carriers from minimalist slick options to full-featured tactical setups.

What Is a Plate Carrier?
A plate carrier is a vest designed to hold hard armor plates — typically Level III or Level IV ceramic or polyethylene plates that stop rifle-caliber threats. Unlike soft armor vests (which stop handgun rounds), plate carriers are designed around rigid ballistic plates that must be purchased separately. The carrier itself provides the structure, retention, and MOLLE webbing; the plates provide the ballistic protection.
Plate Carrier vs. Soft Armor Vest
Soft armor vests (like those worn by most law enforcement) use flexible Kevlar or Dyneema panels that stop handgun rounds and are concealable under clothing. Plate carriers use rigid hard armor plates that stop rifle rounds but are heavier and bulkier. For civilian home defense, a plate carrier with Level III plates is the most practical way to achieve rifle-rated protection on demand.
Sizing and Fit
Plate carriers are sized around the armor plates they accept, typically 10"x12" for most adults. The carrier must hold the plates flat against the chest and back without riding up or shifting during movement. Most quality carriers offer full cummerbund adjustment and shoulder strap adjustment. Try to replicate a loaded configuration (with plates and a minimum of pouches) when fitting — an empty carrier fits very differently than a loaded one.
MOLLE and Accessory Setup
Most plate carriers feature MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) webbing across the front and back panels. This allows attachment of magazine pouches, medical kits, admin pouches, and other accessories. For home defense use, a minimalist setup with 2–3 magazine pouches and a small medical kit is practical and not overly encumbering.
Popular Brands
Condor — The most accessible price point with solid durability for range and training use. Not the lightest or most refined, but extremely cost-effective for new users or those who don't need combat-weight construction.
Shellback Tactical — A significant step up in quality and construction at a mid-tier price. The Shellback Banshee and Patriot are popular choices that balance cost and quality well.
Spartan Armor Systems — Offers both plates and carriers as a complete package, making them a natural one-stop option for buyers who need both components.
FAQ
Do plate carriers come with plates?
Most plate carriers are sold without plates — the carrier and the plates are separate purchases. Verify plate sizing compatibility before ordering a carrier if you already own plates.
What size plates fit most plate carriers?
The standard size is 10"x12" SAPI (Small Arms Protective Insert). This fits most adult male torsos and is the most common plate size in production carriers.
Are plate carriers legal for civilians?
Yes, in most U.S. states. A small number of states have restrictions on body armor purchase or possession by civilians. Check your state and local laws before purchasing.
How heavy is a plate carrier with plates?
A carrier with Level III polyethylene plates typically weighs 10–16 lbs complete. Ceramic Level IV setups run heavier. Weight varies significantly by plate material and carrier construction.
