6.5 Creedmoor Ammo
The 6.5 Creedmoor launched in 2008 and has become the dominant cartridge for long-range precision shooting and hunting at distance, displacing .308 Winchester in many competitive and hunting applications. It fires high-BC .264-inch bullets with less recoil than .308, maintaining supersonic velocity and exceptional accuracy past 1,000 yards. Nearly every major manufacturer now offers 6.5 Creedmoor rifles and ammunition, and we carry hunting, match-grade, and practice loads from all major manufacturers.

Why 6.5 Creedmoor
The 6.5 Creedmoor’s advantages over .308 stem from bullet design: 6.5mm bullets have inherently higher ballistic coefficients than comparable .308-inch bullets at the same weight. This translates to less wind drift, better retained velocity, and improved accuracy at long range. The Creedmoor achieves this with less powder and less recoil than .308, making it easier to spot impacts through a scope and faster to recover from for follow-up shots. For competitive precision shooting and hunting past 400 yards, the advantages are real and measurable.
Hunting Loads
For deer, pronghorn, and elk hunting, 6.5 Creedmoor is one of the most effective medium-bore hunting cartridges available. Hornady ELD-X 143gr, Federal Terminal Ascent 130gr, Nosler AccuBond 129gr, and Browning BXR 129gr are all proven hunting loads. The high BC of 6.5 bullets makes long-range hunting at 400–600 yards practical with a quality rifle. For elk-size game, choose bonded bullets in 140gr or heavier that provide adequate penetration on heavy bone and quartering shots.
Match and Precision Loads
For competition and long-range precision work, the 140-grain class of loads dominates: Hornady ELD-M 140gr, Berger Hybrid 140gr, and Federal Gold Medal Berger 130gr are among the top performers. These loads consistently produce sub-MOA groups from quality rifles and maintain accuracy past 1,200 yards. The Hornady 147gr ELD-M is optimized for extreme long-range work where its superior BC becomes a significant advantage at 1,000+ yards. Match 6.5 Creedmoor is well-supported by virtually every premium ammunition manufacturer.
Practice Loads
For practice and training, Federal American Eagle 140gr FMJ-BT and Hornady Steel Match 140gr are cost-effective options for high-volume training without using expensive match loads. The 140-grain weight is consistent with match loads for similar point-of-impact data. Brass-case FMJ from Federal and Hornady is the standard practice choice and is reloadable for handloaders looking to further reduce per-round cost on a caliber that runs higher than .308 for equivalent load quality.
6.5 Creedmoor vs. .308
The 6.5 Creedmoor is the better choice for pure long-range precision and hunting at distance. The .308 has advantages in energy at medium range, ammunition variety, and historical handloading data. For competitive shooting past 600 yards, 6.5 Creedmoor wins clearly. For hunting inside 400 yards, either is excellent. The .308 also benefits from military surplus availability and a deeper used rifle market. Many serious shooters own both. See our .308 Win page for comparison.
