Buying a gun online from Impact Guns is straightforward — choose your firearm, complete the checkout, provide your local FFL dealer's information, and we ship directly to their location. You complete the standard background check paperwork at the FFL dealer when you pick up your firearm, exactly as you would buying in person. The process is legal in all 50 states and is how millions of firearms are purchased every year. This guide walks through every step so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: Choose Your Firearm at Impact Guns
Browse our full inventory online and add your firearm to the cart. If you have questions about a specific firearm before purchasing, call our team at 800-917-7137 or email sales@impactguns.com—our staff are experienced shooters who can help with recommendations. Once you've found what you want, proceed through checkout as you would any online purchase.
Step 2: Find a Local FFL Dealer
An FFL (Federal Firearms Licensee) is any licensed gun dealer in your area—a local gun shop, sporting goods store, or pawn shop with a firearms license. You need to designate an FFL dealer to receive your firearm shipment. You don't need to know your FFL dealer before you order—you can provide this information after checkout. If you don't have a local dealer in mind, use our FFL dealer lookup tool to find licensed dealers near you. Most FFL dealers charge a transfer fee of $20–$50 to receive the firearm, process the paperwork, and release it to you.
Step 3: Provide Your FFL Dealer's Information
During checkout or after your order is placed, you'll need to provide your FFL dealer's name, address, phone number, and Federal Firearms License number. Your local dealer can provide their FFL number directly, or you can find it on the ATF's online FFL dealer database. Impact Guns may also contact your FFL dealer directly to obtain their license copy, which is standard industry practice. If your local dealer has purchased from us before, they may already be in our system and they will have a green check in the dealer lookup tool.
Step 4: Impact Guns Ships to Your FFL Dealer
Once your order is processed and your FFL dealer's information is confirmed, Impact Guns ships the firearm directly to your designated dealer via a common carrier (UPS or FedEx). Firearms are shipped in compliance with all federal shipping regulations—handguns ship overnight, long guns ship ground. You'll receive a tracking number when your order ships. Shipping timeframes vary; most orders ship within 1–3 business days of order confirmation.
Step 5: Pick Up at Your FFL Dealer
When your firearm arrives at your local FFL dealer, they will contact you for pickup. At pickup, you'll complete ATF Form 4473 (the standard background check form required for all retail firearm purchases) and undergo a NICS background check, exactly as you would buying the firearm directly from that dealer. If you pass the background check, the dealer releases the firearm to you and collects their transfer fee. The entire pickup process typically takes 15–30 minutes.
What Firearms Can Be Shipped Directly to Me?
Federal law requires that all handguns and most long guns be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer—they cannot be shipped directly to an individual's home address. There is one exception: curio & relic (C&R) firearms can be shipped directly to a licensed C&R collector. Certain antique firearms manufactured before 1899 are also not subject to the same transfer requirements. For all modern firearms—handguns, rifles, and shotguns—the FFL transfer process described above applies regardless of which state you live in.
State-Specific Requirements
While the FFL transfer process is federally mandated and consistent across all states, some states add additional requirements. California requires a 10-day waiting period and the firearm must be on the state's approved roster. New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and several other states have additional permitting, waiting period, or magazine capacity requirements. Impact Guns ships to all states where the firearm is legal and complies with all applicable state regulations. If you have questions about whether a specific firearm can be shipped to your state, contact our team before ordering.
Buying a Gun Online vs. In Our Stores
If you live in northern Utah or the Boise, Idaho area, you're welcome to visit our Impact Guns retail locations in Ogden, UT and Boise, ID to purchase in person. Our stores carry the same inventory as our website and our staff can answer questions, let you handle firearms before purchasing, and complete the transfer paperwork on-site. For customers outside our retail area, the online purchase and FFL transfer process delivers the same firearm at the same price with the convenience of home selection.
Ordering NFA Items: Suppressors and SBRs
Ordering a suppressor or NFA-classified firearm from Impact Guns follows the same basic process as a standard firearm purchase, with one additional step: ATF approval via the eForms system. After your purchase, Impact Guns holds the item while your Form 4 is processed through eforms.atf.gov. Since January 1, 2026, the $200 NFA tax stamp has been eliminated — registration is now free. Once your Form 4 is approved, Impact Guns transfers the item to you directly (if you're in Utah or Idaho and pick up in store) or ships it to your local FFL for transfer. For the full walkthrough of the NFA registration process, see our ATF eForms guide.

Age Restrictions on Firearms
You must be 21 years of age to purchase a handgun or shotgun with a pistol grip. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or standard shotgun (without a pistol grip.)
How to Buy Machine Guns, Suppressors, Short-Barreled Shotguns, A.O.W.'s and Short Barreled Rifles, as Regulated by the ATF and the National Firearms Act, (NFA.)
SPECIAL NOTE: There is no longer a $200 NFA tax on transfers of any suppressor, AOW (any other weapon), or SBR (short-barreled rifled), or SBS (short-barreled shotgun).
It is a common misconception that machine guns cannot be owned by law-abiding citizens. This comes from the creation of a variety of confusing laws that have made purchasing a full-auto gun more difficult than purchasing a "normal" gun. But, if you can comply with the law, you may qualify to own a machine gun or suppressor, AOW (any other weapon), or short-barreled rifles or shotguns (SBR, or SBS).
First a brief history: In May of 1986, certain laws went into effect that made it illegal for 'civilians' to own fully automatic firearms that were manufactured AFTER THAT DATE. Many fully automatic weapons manufactured, registered and tax paid BEFORE MAY, 1986, MAY BE OWNED BY AND SOLD TO INDIVIDUALS. The full-auto guns that may be owned by individuals are called 'transferable'. Some states DO NOT allow machine gun ownership at all, no matter when the gun was made, but many states do.
To purchase a transferable machine gun, you must meet certain requirements (generally the same as when you purchase another gun, but with additional scrutiny), fill out special paperwork (called a 'form 4'), and pay a $200, one-time, transfer tax. This transfer tax no longer applies for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns or AOWs. Every time a machine gun is transferred, the $200 tax must be paid-- usually by the purchaser. The steps to take to purchase a transferable machine gun are:
- Find a dealer locally who can assist you in all phases of the transfer. This should go beyond helping you fill out the paperwork: they should help you locate the gun if it isn't in stock and allow you to shoot the gun while your paperwork is being processed by the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms). It will usually take 6-8 weeks, (although this can vary depending on the BATF's time to process), for the dealer to get the gun from another dealer if they don't already have it in stock (due to BATF paperwork delays).
- Get your fingerprints (either by a police dept. or by a qualified fingerprinter, two imprints are needed) and two passport sized pictures taken. These will be used to perform a comprehensive criminal background check on you.
- Have your local dealer help you fill out an "Application for Tax Paid Transfer And Registration Of Firearm" for, known as a "form 4".
- You must have the signature of the Chief Law Enforcement (CLEO) officer that has jurisdiction over the municipality in which you live on the form 4. This could be the City Chief or the County Sheriff, for example. This is usually not a problem-- in machine gun friendly states. The form 4, CLEO signature, 2 fingerprint cards, 2 pictures, and a $200 check (your one-time transfer tax) must all be mailed to the BATF and an approved tax stamp returned before you may take possession of the gun. This may take anywhere from 2 to 5 months.
Although it may seem complicated, we are happy to help you through every step in the process. We have transferable guns in stock, and if we don't have it, we can tap into a network of dealers in other states to find it for you. Let us help you get the full-auto gun that you've always wanted-- they are worth it! We are not lawyers, and do not represent ourselves to offer legal advice. We can point you in the direction of counsel upon request.
- Order the item online, or phone us at (801)393-2474 ext. 303. Your order will be treated as a QUOTE, as we begin the process described below. Quote may be cancelled at any time with no charge or penalty. We may determine you do not qualify for ownership of an NFA (National Firearms Act, often referred to as ‘Class 3’) item.
- Identify an ATF Licensed Dealer (Machine Gun) dealer near you. Impact Guns has reputable dealers willing to do transfers on file all over the country. We will assist you in locating one near you. Put his shipping address on your online order. Note: Don’t know a dealer who is licensed to hander your Machine Gun Transfer? First, ask us to help you locate one, or-- Tips: contact several regular dealers and ask them if they know of a class 3 dealer, or a good source for leads are local shooting clubs, firing ranges, NRA members, etc. Your local class 3 dealer will be doing the ATF Form 4 transfer to you. He will usually charge $50.00 to $100.00 for this service. Payment in full is necessary before transfer papers will be submitted to B.A.T.F.E. If you are paying by check, we will hold the item for you for a reasonable time while awaiting your payment. We reserve the right to reject an order for any reason.
- Have the dealer (or you) fax, e-mail, or mail his license F.F.L. (Federal Firearms License) and his S.O.T. (Special Occupational Tax License) to us. Use this Coversheet (Print out this form, fill in the blanks, and give it to your dealer as a faxable coversheet.)
- We will transfer the gun to your local Class III dealer on ATF Form 3. This transfer will usually take between 6-8 weeks, depending on backlog at the BATF and other circumstances.
- We ship to your Class III dealer upon ATF Form-3 approval. We will notify you when this happens.
- Inspect your gun (at your dealer) within 5 days. If you are unsatisfied, we will have the gun returned to us. Refunds are issued after the firearm is back in our possession, less shipping and handling charges. A restocking fee may apply.
- If you are satisfied, then the gun is transferred on a ATF Form-4, from your local dealer to you. This may take approx 90 days+, again depending upon the BATF and the FBI background check that begins on your end, and with your local dealers help.
- NFA items are Special Order items. Payment must be made in full before transfer papers are submitted to B.A.T.F.E. Once an N.F.A. transfer has started and the paperwork has been submitted to the ATF, we are unable to cancel or return the order. If you have warranty issues with the product itself, we will work with you and the manufacturer to get them resolved. We have no way to control the length of time the ATF/NFA Branch takes to approve the paperwork.
The process is complex, but we do pride ourselves on helping you through from start to finish. Notice: these instructions are abbreviated and are intended as a guide. We are not offering legal advice as to whether or not you are qualified for ownership of NFA regulated items. Note: Penalties for illegal or questionable possesion of NFA items are severe. We may require more information from you, and you may have to provide addition information as required by your local authorities. The following guides and resources were used for these procedures and we recommend you become familiar with them: A. The National Firearms Act, Title 26, United States Code,INTERNAL REVENUE CODE B. ATF National Firearms Act Handbook
