What Is an AR-15 Shotgun?
AR-style shotguns are semi-automatic 12 gauge (and occasionally 20 gauge) shotguns that use an AR-15 inspired design — pistol grip stock, detachable box magazine, and familiar controls. They’re not AR-15s chambered in shotgun caliber; they’re purpose-built shotgun platforms that borrow the ergonomics and manual of arms from the AR world. The result is a shotgun that’s faster to reload than a tube-fed pump, easier to run with optics, and more familiar to shooters already comfortable with the AR platform.
Box Magazine vs. Tube Fed: Why It Matters
Traditional pump and semi-auto shotguns feed from a fixed tube magazine under the barrel, typically holding 4–8 rounds. AR-style shotguns use detachable box magazines — typically 5 or 10 rounds — that drop free and reload like a rifle. This makes a significant difference for home defense (faster reloads under stress), competition shooting (stage reloads), and range use. The tradeoff is that box-magazine shotguns tend to be more finicky about ammunition than a quality pump gun, and cheap birdshot may not cycle reliably — stick to quality buckshot or slugs.
Gauge and Ammunition
Nearly all AR-style shotguns are chambered in 12 gauge, which is the right choice for home defense and most practical applications. 12 gauge buckshot — particularly 00 buckshot — is the gold standard for defensive shotgun use. Most AR-style shotguns are also compatible with slugs for extended range use or hunting. A few models chamber 20 gauge for lighter recoil, though selection is more limited.
One important note: run quality ammunition. Semi-auto box magazine shotguns require adequate gas pressure to cycle reliably. Light target loads and cheap birdshot often won’t cycle these guns. We recommend 2¾” or 3” 00 buckshot or slugs for reliable function.
Staff Picks
Gforce Arms GF25 (12 Ga, 20" barrel) — Our best value AR-style shotgun. The GF25 offers solid reliability at an entry-level price point. Good fit and finish for the money, and it runs reliably with quality buckshot. The best starting point if you’re new to the platform.
Tokarev TAR-12MP (12 Ga, 18.5" barrel) — A well-regarded mid-tier option with a shorter barrel that makes it more maneuverable for home defense. The Tokarev has earned a good reputation for reliability and is one of our more consistent sellers in this category.
Citadel Boss-25 (12 Ga, 18.75" barrel) — Another solid mid-range option available in multiple finish options including Tungsten Cerakote. Feeds reliably and handles well. Good choice if you want something more visually distinctive.
ATI Bulldog Bullpup (12 Ga, 18.5" barrel) — The most compact option we carry. Bullpup configuration puts the action behind the trigger group, giving you an 18.5" barrel in an overall length shorter than most conventional shotguns. Excellent for tight spaces and home defense. Higher price, but a genuinely different and capable platform.
What to Consider Before Buying
- Plan to run quality buckshot or slugs — light loads often won’t cycle reliably in semi-auto box magazine shotguns.
- Barrel length matters for maneuverability: 18.5" is the most popular for home defense, 20"+ for range and competition use.
- Most of these platforms accept AR-15 style furniture, optics mounts, and accessories — a significant advantage over traditional shotguns.
- State laws vary — check your local regulations regarding magazine capacity and shotgun configuration before purchasing.
