Ballistics Overview

Full-power 10mm loads push a 180-grain bullet to 1,200–1,300 fps, producing 575–675 ft-lbs of energy—significantly more than .45 ACP and approaching .357 Magnum territory from a semi-automatic platform. Lighter 135–155 grain loads run faster but with less retained energy at distance. Be aware that “downloaded” 10mm loads—essentially .40 S&W ballistics in a 10mm case—are common; if you want full 10mm performance, verify that the load you choose runs at true 10mm velocities, not .40-equivalent specs.

Full-Power vs. Standard Loads

The 10mm market splits between full-power loads (1,200+ fps with 180gr) and milder standard-pressure offerings. Full-power loads from Buffalo Bore, Underwood, and DoubleTap represent the caliber at its design specification. Standard-pressure loads from Federal and Hornady are more comfortable to shoot and gentler on the gun over many rounds, but sacrifice the performance that makes 10mm worth choosing over .45 ACP. For hunting and woods carry, full-power loads are the right choice; for practice and general carry, standard-pressure is reasonable.

Defensive Applications

Federal HST 200gr and Hornady Critical Duty 175gr FlexLock are among the best defensive 10mm loads, offering expansion and penetration that exceed most other pistol calibers. The Glock 20 and Glock 29 are the most common defensive 10mm platforms; the S&W M&P 10mm and Springfield Operator are also well-regarded. For carry, the compact Glock 29 is most practical despite its increased recoil versus the full-size G20. Full-power 10mm loads produce significant recoil that requires practice to manage effectively from compact platforms.

Hunting and Woods Carry

The 10mm is used by outdoorsmen and hunters as a sidearm for deer, hog, and bear country. Hard-cast flat-nose loads from Buffalo Bore (220gr) and Underwood (200gr) penetrate deeply enough for large and dangerous animals. At close range, a full-power 10mm hard-cast load is a meaningful upgrade over other pistol options for stopping a charging animal. The Glock 20’s 15-round capacity makes it practical for this role, particularly in areas with significant bear or hog populations where shot opportunities may come quickly.

Pricing and Availability

10mm is priced higher than 9mm and .45 ACP due to its smaller market and higher powder charge. FMJ practice loads typically run $0.50–$0.80 per round; full-power premium loads from Buffalo Bore and Underwood run $1.00–$1.50. Availability is adequate from major retailers but more limited than common calibers—buying in quantity when supply is available is advisable. Federal, Hornady, and Winchester offer 10mm at reasonable prices; boutique loaders like Buffalo Bore command a significant premium for their full-power offerings.
