Colorado Legal Guns

Colorado firearm laws are straightforward compared to heavily restricted states like California. The primary Colorado restriction affecting firearm purchases is a 15-round magazine capacity limit for magazines manufactured after July 1, 2013. Standard semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns in common configurations are fully legal to purchase and own in Colorado. Impact Guns ships firearms to Colorado through licensed FFL dealers and carries the full range of standard-configuration firearms for Colorado customers.

Colorado Magazine Capacity Law

Colorado HB 13-1224 (effective July 1, 2013) prohibits the sale, transfer, or possession of magazines capable of accepting more than 15 rounds manufactured after that date. Magazines manufactured before July 1, 2013 are grandfathered and legal to own and use. This restriction primarily affects extended and high-capacity magazines—standard factory magazines for most semi-automatic pistols (Glock 17 17-round, SIG P320 17-round) exceed the 15-round limit and are therefore not legal to purchase new in Colorado. Colorado-compliant magazines hold 15 rounds or fewer.

What Is and Isn’t Restricted in Colorado

Colorado does NOT restrict rifle features the way California does—AR-15 rifles with pistol grips, adjustable stocks, flash hiders, and other features that trigger California restrictions are fully legal in Colorado in standard configuration. The only firearm-related restriction affecting most buyers is the 15-round magazine limit. Standard rifles, handguns, and shotguns are fully legal to purchase. Suppressors follow standard federal NFA rules. Short-barreled rifles and shotguns require the standard federal NFA process. Colorado does not have its own separate assault weapons ban as of 2026.

Buying Firearms as a Colorado Resident

Colorado residents purchasing from Impact Guns follow the standard FFL transfer process—the firearm ships to a licensed Colorado FFL dealer near you, who conducts the required background check and transfer. Colorado uses the InstaCheck background check system. Colorado does not impose additional waiting periods beyond the federal process for most buyers. For handguns, Colorado residents must be 21 or older; for long guns, 18 or older, per federal law. See: Find an FFL Near You.

Recommended Firearms for Colorado Buyers

For Colorado buyers who want full-capacity magazines within state law, 15-round factory magazines are widely available for most common pistol platforms. Glock 19 (15-round standard), SIG P320 Compact (15-round standard), and most compact semi-automatic pistols ship with 15-round or smaller standard magazines that are fully Colorado-compliant. AR-15 rifles are sold with 10-round or 15-round magazines from Impact Guns for Colorado customers. See: Handguns, AR-15 Rifles, and Magazines.
