6mm ARC Ammo

The 6mm ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) is Hornady’s military-derived cartridge designed to bring 6mm precision rifle performance to the standard AR-15 platform. Developed from data gathered during U.S. Special Operations testing, the 6mm ARC fires high-BC 103–108 grain 6mm bullets at 2,750–2,800 fps, delivering sub-MOA performance at 1,000 yards from a gas-impingement AR-15 with a standard BCG and lower receiver.

6mm ARC vs. 6.5 Grendel: Which AR-15 Precision Cartridge Wins?

The 6mm ARC and 6.5 Grendel are direct competitors for the “best long-range AR-15 cartridge” title. The 6mm ARC fires a lighter, higher-velocity bullet with excellent BC — it drifts less in wind at distance than the Grendel due to its flatter trajectory. The 6.5 Grendel carries more energy at longer ranges due to its heavier bullet and is a more established hunting cartridge with wider factory load availability. For competition-focused long-range shooting, the 6mm ARC’s ballistics edge it out. For hunting and general use, the Grendel’s ammo availability and proven track record are advantages.

6mm ARC Bullet Weights and Performance

The 6mm ARC is primarily available in 103–108 grain loads — a fairly narrow weight range compared to other calibers, reflecting its purpose-designed nature. Hornady offers the 105 grain Black load for general use and the 108 grain ELD Match for precision competition. The tight weight range means most 6mm ARC rifles are optimized for this specific bullet class — check your barrel twist (1:7.5 is standard) before experimenting with lighter or heavier projectiles. The 108 grain ELD Match retains over 1,000 ft-lbs of energy past 600 yards, making it viable for deer-sized game at moderate to extended ranges.

What Rifles Are Available in 6mm ARC?

The 6mm ARC requires a dedicated bolt (same external dimensions as .223/5.56, but 6mm ARC-specific), barrel, and magazines. Hornady, Ruger, and several AR-15 builders offer factory 6mm ARC rifles and uppers. The Ruger American Ranch in 6mm ARC is notable as a bolt-action option. For AR-15 conversions, an upper swap is all that’s needed. Magazine options are more limited than 6.5 Grendel currently — Hornady and ASC make dedicated 6mm ARC mags. The cartridge is newer than the Grendel so aftermarket support continues to grow, but Grendel has a head start on parts availability.

6mm ARC for Hunting: Deer, Hogs & Predators

The 6mm ARC is a legal and effective deer cartridge in most states — the 103–108 grain loads deliver adequate energy within 400 yards on whitetail and mule deer. For hogs and predators, its flat trajectory and mild recoil make it an excellent choice. As with all 6mm cartridges, shot placement is important — this is not a cartridge that forgives marginal hits on heavy-bodied game. Use bonded or controlled-expansion hunting bullets (Hornady’s CX or ELD-X) rather than match bullets for hunting applications.

6mm ARC Ammo Availability & Related Pages

6mm ARC factory ammo is currently dominated by Hornady, though Federal and others have begun offering loads. Availability is improving but still not as broad as 6.5 Grendel or .223/5.56. For related calibers, see our 6.5 Creedmoor page for bolt-action precision rifle use. The AR-15 rifles page covers complete rifles and uppers in 6mm ARC.
