.17 WSM Ammo

The .17 WSM (Winchester Super Magnum) is the most powerful rimfire cartridge commercially produced, launching 20–25 grain bullets at 3,000 fps from a 24” barrel — roughly 450 fps faster than the .17 HMR from the same barrel length. Introduced in 2013, the .17 WSM was developed from the .27-caliber nail gun blank case, producing a rimfire cartridge with centerfire-like performance in a rimfire platform. It delivers flat trajectories, outstanding wind resistance, and genuine varminting capability at 200+ yards, making it the premier rimfire choice for open-country prairie dog and ground squirrel work.

.17 WSM vs. .17 HMR: Which Rimfire Is Faster?

The .17 WSM runs approximately 3,000 fps with a 20-grain bullet vs. approximately 2,550 fps for the .17 HMR with a 17-grain bullet — a 450 fps advantage. That velocity gap translates to a meaningfully flatter trajectory and better wind resistance at distance. A 20-grain .17 WSM load zeroed at 100 yards drops roughly 1.4” at 150 yards vs. approximately 2.5” for the .17 HMR. In a 10 mph crosswind at 200 yards, the .17 WSM drifts about 2.5” vs. approximately 4” for .17 HMR. For varminting past 150 yards in open, windy terrain, the .17 WSM’s ballistic advantage is meaningful and consistent.

.17 WSM Ballistics: What to Expect in the Field

The .17 WSM produces approximately 400 ft-lbs of muzzle energy with a 20-grain bullet — roughly double the .17 HMR’s 245 ft-lbs. At 200 yards it still carries over 200 ft-lbs, which is adequate for confident varmint kills on prairie dogs and ground squirrels. The high velocity and small frontal area produce explosive expansion on small targets. Effective varminting range is 200–250 yards for skilled shooters in moderate conditions; wind becomes the limiting factor at distance even with the .17 WSM’s superior ballistics. The cartridge is loud — a suppressor is a worthwhile addition. Since January 1, 2026, the NFA $200 tax stamp has been eliminated.

What Rifles Are Chambered in .17 WSM?

Rifle selection for .17 WSM is more limited than for .17 HMR due to the cartridge’s higher pressure requiring a stronger action. Savage offers it in the B-series bolt-action; Winchester in the Wildcat semi-auto; Franklin Armory and Volquartsen in semi-automatic platforms. The Savage B-series is the most widely available and affordable option. Semi-automatic .17 WSM rifles are more finicky about ammunition than bolt-actions — some loads cycle more reliably than others depending on the platform. For bolt-action reliability and accuracy, the Savage B-series is the practical first choice.

.17 WSM Ammunition Availability and Cost

The .17 WSM has narrower ammunition availability than .17 HMR — Winchester, Federal (through their American Eagle and other lines), and Hornady produce it, but it won’t be found at every sporting goods store. Online purchase is the most reliable sourcing strategy. Cost per round runs roughly 20–30% higher than .17 HMR for equivalent quality loads. For dedicated varmint hunters who shoot significant volumes at 150–250 yards, the ballistic improvement justifies the added cost and availability challenge. For general plinking and shorter-range varminting, the .17 HMR offers better value and easier sourcing.

.17 WSM for Predator and Varmint Hunting

The .17 WSM is an excellent predator cartridge for coyotes inside 150 yards — the high velocity and explosive expanding bullets produce immediate incapacitation, though pelt damage from the small, fast bullet is significant at close range. For prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and similar small varmints, the .17 WSM is devastatingly effective to 200+ yards. The combination of flat trajectory and superior wind resistance makes it a better field cartridge than the .17 HMR for any application where shots beyond 150 yards are routine. Running suppressed with subsonic loads is possible but limits range significantly — the .17 WSM performs best at supersonic velocities.
