Streamlight TLR-7

The Streamlight TLR-7 is the most popular compact weapon-mounted light in law enforcement and civilian defensive use — a 500-lumen, rail-mount pistol light that balances output, size, and durability in a package that fits most full-size and compact service pistols. Streamlight’s TLR family has been a standard-issue choice for law enforcement agencies across the country for decades, and the TLR-7 brings that pedigree to a slimmer, lighter form factor designed for both duty holsters and everyday carry setups.

TLR-7 vs. TLR-7A: What’s the Difference?

The TLR-7 and TLR-7A are nearly identical in output and size, with one key difference: the TLR-7A adds an ambidextrous switching option, allowing the activation paddle to be configured for either right- or left-handed operation. Both deliver 500 lumens on high and a strobe mode. The TLR-7A is the more popular choice for duty and carry use because the ambidextrous switch can be positioned for optimal thumb or finger activation regardless of shooting hand. For right-handed shooters using the standard activation position, the base TLR-7 works equally well at a slightly lower price.

TLR-7 Sub: The Subcompact Version

The Streamlight TLR-7 Sub is a purpose-built variant for micro-compact and subcompact pistols — the Sig P365, Glock 43X, Springfield Hellcat, and similar platforms that use proprietary or reduced-size rail systems rather than the standard 1913 Picatinny rail. The TLR-7 Sub produces 500 lumens from a shorter, lighter housing that doesn’t extend significantly beyond the muzzle of a short-barreled subcompact. It uses Streamlight’s pistol-specific mounting system and requires pistol-specific mounting keys, so always confirm compatibility with your specific model before purchasing.

How Does the TLR-7 Compare to the TLR-1?

The TLR-1 HL is Streamlight’s full-size weapon light producing 1,000 lumens from a larger housing. The TLR-7 offers 500 lumens in a package roughly half the size and weight. For most defensive pistol applications at typical engagement distances (inside 25 yards), 500 lumens is fully adequate to identify and temporarily disorient a threat. The TLR-1 HL’s advantage is longer-range illumination and higher candela output for outdoor use. For concealed carry and duty pistols where minimizing overall size and weight matters, the TLR-7 is the more practical choice. The TLR-1 remains preferred for duty rifles, shotguns, and full-size pistols where maximum output is the priority.

Holster Compatibility With the TLR-7

The TLR-7 is one of the most widely supported weapon lights for holster compatibility. Safariland, Blackhawk, Alien Gear, and most major holster manufacturers produce TLR-7-specific duty and concealment holsters for popular pistol models. Before purchasing a TLR-7, verify that a holster is available for your specific pistol-and-light combination — holster fit is determined by both the pistol model and the specific light model. TLR-7A compatibility may differ from TLR-7 compatibility in some holsters due to the switch position. Streamlight’s website maintains a compatibility guide for both pistol and holster fit.

Battery and Runtime

The TLR-7 runs on a single CR123A lithium battery providing approximately 1.5 hours of runtime on high mode. CR123A batteries are widely available, have a 10-year shelf life, and perform reliably in extreme cold where alkaline batteries fail — an important consideration for outdoor or duty use in winter conditions. The side-loading battery compartment allows battery replacement without removing the light from the pistol. Streamlight recommends replacing the battery annually for duty weapons regardless of actual use to ensure full output when needed.
