HK 45
The HK45 is Heckler & Koch's full-size .45 ACP service pistol—developed in the mid-2000s as part of HK's response to the U.S. Joint Combat Pistol program and representing the evolutionary refinement of the USP platform. It features a 10-round magazine, a 4.46-inch barrel, HK's signature polygonal rifling, and a DA/SA trigger with HK's proprietary control lever system that allows the pistol to be configured in multiple trigger variants. The HK45 Compact (HK45C) shortens the barrel to 3.94 inches and reduces the grip for concealed carry while maintaining the same .45 ACP chambering. Both are built to the same exacting tolerances that define HK's professional pistol lineup.

HK45 vs HK USP: Understanding the Lineage
The HK45 is a direct evolution of the HK USP .45, incorporating lessons from over a decade of USP service. The HK45 is slimmer than the USP—HK shaved width from the frame and grip to improve concealability and ergonomics. The control lever system on the HK45 is more refined, offering nine different trigger/decocking configurations through interchangeable lever variants. The grip texture and angle were revised for improved pointability. The HK45 also accepts a wider range of threaded barrel and suppressor options. For buyers who own or have shot the USP .45 and found the grip too wide or the controls slightly awkward, the HK45 resolves both concerns while keeping the USP's legendary durability.
HK45 Trigger Options: DA/SA, LEM, and More
One of the HK45's most distinctive features is its configurable trigger system via the control lever. The standard configuration is DA/SA with a decocking lever. The LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) trigger converts the HK45 to a consistent double-action-only pull with a short reset—combining the consistent trigger weight of a DAO with a reset closer to a single-action. The LEM is popular with law enforcement agencies and defensive shooters who want consistency on every shot without a thumb safety. HK also offers variants with a manual safety, with or without a decocker, and in DAO configuration. Few production pistols offer this level of trigger configurability from the factory.
HK45 Compact: Carrying .45 ACP in a Smaller Package
The HK45 Compact reduces the barrel to 3.94 inches and trims the grip to an 8-round flush magazine, with a 10-round extended magazine available. Overall length drops from 7.52 inches on the full-size to 6.97 inches, and weight comes down slightly. The HK45C retains the same control lever system, the same polygonal-rifled barrel, and the same rail for weapon lights as the full-size. It is well-suited as a duty pistol for officers who need .45 ACP in a more packable format, or as a concealed carry option for experienced shooters who want the terminal performance of .45 ACP from a compact platform. The HK45C is also available with a threaded barrel for suppressor use.
HK45 for Suppressor Use
The HK45 and HK45C are well-regarded suppressor hosts in .45 ACP. HK offers factory threaded barrel options, and the .45 ACP cartridge is inherently subsonic at standard pressure loadings—making it one of the most naturally suppressor-friendly centerfire pistol calibers available. A standard pressure 230-grain .45 ACP round runs at approximately 850 fps, well below the 1,125 fps speed of sound, so no special subsonic ammunition is required for hearing-safe suppressed fire. The HK45's polygonal rifling and the DA/SA action's smooth cycling work well with the back-pressure of a suppressor attached. With NFA tax stamps eliminated as of January 1, 2026, running the HK45 suppressed is now a straightforward addition.
HK45 Magazines and Accessories
HK45 full-size magazines hold 10 rounds of .45 ACP; extended 12-round magazines are available. The HK45 uses a proprietary magazine that does not interchange with USP .45 magazines—an important distinction when building a magazine supply. The accessory rail accepts standard Picatinny-pattern weapon lights and lasers. HK offers factory night sights, threaded barrels, and holsters through their accessories catalog. The aftermarket for HK45-specific Kydex holsters has grown substantially, with major makers including Safariland and Blackhawk offering duty holsters, and custom Kydex shops producing IWB and OWB options for the civilian market.
