functionally excellent, but could be better overal
This pistol is operationally excellent. I've heard that many stock 1911 models have issues failing to feed or eject, but this one works flawlessly straight out of the box. You won't have any problems when using factory ammo, and you would have to go really low on the powder in re-loads before you find a formula that won't eject (I tested it to see and eventually got it there, but you won't have that problem at all with standard ammo). My only complaints with this pistol are two-fold. One is the fiber optic sight. When I use this at the target range, I cannot tell any difference in the blue fiber optic versus the black blade, and you definitely cannot see the thing at all in the dark. That part is functionally useless. If you shine a light on it, you can see it glow a little, but the whole point of a fiber optic is to use it in low light. The box came with 2-3 replacement fiber optic cylinders, so I may just need to try changing it, or accept it for what it is. Second, the finish on this pistol is not at all durable. I've put about 1000 rounds through it (only half of them left-handed) and my wedding ring has rubbed a scratch where my finger wraps around. There also are scratches along the slide from a leather holster (even though I've only holstered it 2-3 times). Worse yet, I have a finger print etched into the slide from where I let my thumb touch it while putting it into the drawer after cleaning it (it only took 2-3 weeks before the fingerprint started to rust). Those issues may all be my fault and I should have taken better care, but I would expect a newer model firearm like this to have a much more durable coating (I haven't had these problems with other new handguns that I have purchased). Overall, I'd say it's a great buy for the price, especially for a Colt branded 1911, but I expected it to be a little better.
