.30-06 Rifles
The .30-06 Springfield is America’s most versatile hunting cartridge — capable of taking every game animal on the continent from pronghorn to moose with appropriate bullet selection, backed by the widest variety of factory ammunition of any magnum-class cartridge. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1906 and carried through both World Wars, the .30-06 has been the default American hunting cartridge for over a century. Impact Guns carries .30-06 rifles from Remington, Winchester, Savage, Ruger, Browning, Tikka, Bergara, and others in bolt-action, semi-auto, and lever-action configurations.

Why .30-06 in 2026?
Newer cartridges like 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Winchester, and the PRC family get more attention, but the .30-06 remains the most versatile single-cartridge choice for a North American hunter. It shoots flatter than .308 Win with the same bullet weight (200–300 fps faster), handles bullet weights from 110 grains (varmints) through 220 grains (moose and bear), and is available in more factory load options than any cartridge except .308. If you own one centerfire hunting rifle for everything from Texas whitetail to Alaska moose, .30-06 is still the answer it’s been since 1906.
Best .30-06 Bolt-Action Rifles
The Winchester Model 70 is the classic .30-06 bolt gun — controlled-round-feed Mauser action, walnut stock, and a heritage that goes back to 1936. The Remington 700 in .30-06 is the most widely sold bolt-action rifle in American history. The Ruger American is the best budget .30-06 rifle. The Tikka T3x offers the smoothest factory bolt action. The Browning X-Bolt is the premium hunting option. The Savage 110 brings the AccuTrigger to the .30-06 at a mid-range price.
.30-06 Semi-Auto Rifles
The Browning BAR is the classic .30-06 semi-auto hunting rifle — gas-operated, accurate, and proven across decades. The Springfield M1A (civilian M14) is available in .308 but not .30-06; for a military-pattern .30-06 semi-auto, the M1 Garand from the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) is the historic option.
.30-06 vs. .308 Winchester
.308 Winchester fits in a short-action rifle (lighter, shorter bolt throw) and produces less recoil. The .30-06 runs 100–200 fps faster with the same bullet weight from a long-action rifle, which matters most with heavy 180–220 grain bullets for elk and moose. For deer-sized game inside 400 yards, the difference is negligible. For elk and larger game at range, the .30-06’s velocity advantage with heavy bullets provides a meaningful energy edge.
.30-06 vs. 6.5 Creedmoor
6.5 Creedmoor recoils less, drifts less in wind, and shoots flatter trajectory than .30-06 with high-BC bullets. The .30-06 hits harder at any range with heavier bullets and is a more reliable killer on elk-sized game. For deer, either works. For elk and larger game, the .30-06’s larger, heavier bullets provide a meaningful terminal advantage. For long-range precision where recoil and wind matter most, 6.5 Creedmoor has the edge.
.30-06 Ammunition
The .30-06 has the widest factory ammunition selection of any hunting cartridge — from 110-grain varmint loads through 220-grain round-nose brush loads, with every premium hunting bullet available in between. Federal, Hornady, Winchester, Remington, Nosler, Barnes, and Norma all produce extensive .30-06 lines. See our .30-06 ammunition page for current inventory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is .30-06 still a good hunting cartridge?
Yes — it remains one of the most versatile hunting cartridges in the world, capable of taking any North American game animal with appropriate bullet selection.
.30-06 or .308 for deer?
Either works. .308 in a lighter short-action rifle if weight matters. .30-06 if you also hunt elk or larger game where the extra velocity with heavy bullets helps.
Does .30-06 kick hard?
Moderate to heavy recoil depending on rifle weight — more than .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, less than magnum cartridges. A quality recoil pad helps significantly.
What is the best .30-06 rifle?
Winchester Model 70 for the classic action. Tikka T3x for the smoothest bolt. Ruger American for the best value. Browning X-Bolt for premium features.
