Smith & Wesson Governor

The Smith & Wesson Governor is a 6-shot large-frame revolver chambered to accept three cartridges interchangeably: .45 ACP (with moon clips), .45 Colt, and 2.5” .410 bore shotshells. Built on an aluminum alloy frame with a stainless steel cylinder, the Governor is designed for home defense and trail carry where the ability to deploy buckshot .410 loads, standard .45 ACP defensive ammunition, or .45 Colt hunting rounds from the same platform is a genuine advantage. Scandium-frame and Performance Center variants are also available for shooters who want reduced weight or enhanced features.

Governor vs. Taurus Judge: What’s the Difference?

The S&W Governor and Taurus Judge are the two dominant .410/.45 revolvers on the market. The key differences: the Governor holds 6 rounds vs. the Judge’s 5; the Governor accepts .45 ACP via moon clips while the Judge does not; and the Governor is built to S&W’s higher fit-and-finish standard at a higher price. The Judge is available in more barrel length options including the long-barreled Public Defender. For shooters who want the best-built .410 revolver with maximum capacity and .45 ACP compatibility, the Governor is the premium choice. The Judge is the more affordable entry point into the .410 revolver category.

What .410 Loads Work Best in the Governor?

The Governor’s 2.75” cylinder is dimensioned for 2.5” .410 shells only — 3” shells will not chamber. For defensive use, Federal Premium Personal Defense .410 with four 000 buckshot pellets or Winchester PDX1 Defender with three .36-caliber discs and 12 BBs are the most popular choices. These loads deliver multiple projectiles at close range without requiring precise sight alignment — the primary defensive appeal of .410 in a revolver. For snake and pest control, CCI Snake Shot in .45 Colt is highly effective. For hunting and trail carry, standard .45 Colt hunting loads offer the best terminal performance.

Governor for Home Defense: Is the .410 Option Practical?

The .410 bore in a revolver barrel is a close-range proposition — patterns open quickly and pellet energy drops off faster than rifle or pistol cartridges. Inside 10 yards, a quality defensive .410 load delivers multiple wound channels simultaneously, which has genuine stopping power implications. Beyond 15 yards, pattern spread becomes too wide for reliable hit probability on a humanoid target. The Governor’s six-round capacity and the ability to mix .410 and .45 ACP loads in the same cylinder — .410 for close range, .45 ACP for further engagement — gives experienced shooters a tactically flexible platform for home defense.

Governor Scandium vs. Standard: Weight and Tradeoffs

The standard Governor uses an aluminum alloy frame and weighs 29.6 oz. — substantial, but manageable for carry. The Scandium-frame Governor reduces weight to 26.2 oz. at a higher price. Both use stainless steel cylinders to handle the pressure and abrasion of .410 shotshells. The weight reduction is meaningful for daily carry; however, lighter revolvers generate more felt recoil with full-power .45 Colt or defensive .410 loads. For home defense where the revolver is staged rather than carried, the standard aluminum frame Governor is the practical choice. For trail carry, the Scandium variant’s weight reduction is worth the premium.

Using Moon Clips with the Governor

The Governor’s cylinder is cut to accept .45 ACP via 2-round or 6-round moon clips, which hold the rimless .45 ACP cases at the correct headspace. Moon clips also enable fast reloading — you can pre-load clips and swap them almost as quickly as a semi-auto magazine change with practice. The Governor ships with moon clips included. Standard .45 ACP and .45 ACP +P ammunition are both compatible. This moon clip capability is the Governor’s most significant advantage over the Taurus Judge — it gives the Governor access to the widest range of quality defensive handgun ammunition available.
