Why Does the SBE3 Dominate the Waterfowl Semi-Auto Category?

The SBE3’s dominance comes from a combination of Benelli’s inertia system reliability and the ComforTech stock. The inertia-driven action has fewer moving parts than gas-operated alternatives, runs clean even when caked with mud and debris from a marsh blind, and cycles 3.5″ magnum steel loads as reliably as lighter field loads. The ComforTech stock’s polymer chevron inserts absorb felt recoil measurably—Benelli claims up to 48% recoil reduction vs. a rigid stock. Over the course of a duck hunting season shooting heavy steel loads, this difference is meaningful in shooter comfort and follow-up shot speed. The SBE3 also introduced a larger trigger guard for gloved hands, a stronger polymer stock, and a redesigned safety that’s easier to operate with gloves on.

SBE3 vs. SBE2: What Did Benelli Change?

The synthetic black version is the most versatile and easiest to clean. A left-hand model is available—a meaningful option given that lefties who shoot a standard semi-auto must eject shells across their face. The SBE3 is also offered in a 20-gauge configuration for hunters who want the 3″ 20-gauge platform, though the 3.5″ 12-gauge remains the flagship. Turkey-specific configurations add extra-full turkey choke tubes and shorter barrels.

SBE3 vs. Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus: Inertia vs. Gas

The Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus and Benelli SBE3 are the two premium waterfowl semi-autos that most serious hunters compare. The A400’s self-compensating gas system provides softer felt recoil than even the SBE3’s ComforTech stock—gas-operated guns are inherently softer-shooting than inertia guns for high-volume use. The SBE3’s inertia system is cleaner-running with less maintenance required in field conditions. The A400 with Kick-Off recoil system is the better choice for a shooter who fires hundreds of rounds per session at clays or in high-volume dove shoots. The SBE3 is the better choice for a hunter who prioritizes absolute reliability in harsh field conditions with minimal maintenance.

Chokes and Non-Toxic Load Compatibility

The SBE3 uses Benelli’s Crio Plus choke system, which features cryogenic treatment and extended porting for improved patterns and reduced plastic wad fouling. Standard Crio Plus chokes are compatible with steel shot one choke size below the rated constriction (e.g., use IC for Modified patterns with steel). Aftermarket steel-rated extended chokes from Carlson’s, Kicks, and Patternmaster cover the full range of non-toxic waterfowl applications. Never use full or extra-full chokes with steel shot—the pattern will be damaged and barrel damage is possible. The SBE3’s 3.5″ chamber handles the heaviest bismuth, Heavyweight TSS, and tungsten loads available for extended waterfowl range.
