Why the G19 Is the Default Recommendation

The Glock 19 succeeds by doing everything adequately and nothing poorly. It’s compact enough for concealed carry under most clothing without being so small that it’s difficult to shoot accurately. Fifteen rounds is enough capacity for virtually any defensive scenario. The 4.02-inch barrel is long enough for accurate shooting at distance. The polymer frame and striker-fired action require minimal maintenance. The enormous aftermarket means every accessory, holster, sight, and trigger modification is available. The G19 accepts G17 magazines for 17-round capacity when concealment isn’t required. For anyone who wants one pistol that does everything, the G19 has been that answer for decades.

Gen 5 Improvements

The Gen 5 G19 brought meaningful improvements over earlier generations. The finger grooves were removed from the frontstrap, making the grip more universally comfortable for different hand sizes and shooting styles. The flared magwell improves reload speed. The ambidextrous slide stop accommodates left-handed shooters without modification. The Marksman barrel delivers improved accuracy over the polygonal rifling of earlier generations. The nDLC finish improves corrosion resistance. For buyers choosing between a used earlier-generation G19 and a new Gen 5, the Gen 5 improvements are real and the price difference is typically modest—the Gen 5 is the right choice for most buyers.

G19 MOS—The Optics-Ready Version

The Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS is the recommended configuration for any buyer who intends to run a red dot. The factory-milled slide accepts Glock MOS adapter plates for Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507c/509t, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and other popular footprints. Running a red dot on a carry G19 provides a genuine accuracy advantage, particularly for low-light defensive scenarios and for shooters with presbyopia who struggle to focus on a front sight. The MOS configuration is available at a modest price premium over the standard Gen 5 and is worth the difference for any buyer who is serious about optics-equipped carry.

Concealed Carry

The G19 is concealable for most people with appropriate clothing and a quality holster. IWB appendix carry is the most popular configuration for the G19, with the compact slide length preventing barrel printing at the thigh. Strong-side hip carry works well with looser cover garments. The G19 is on the larger end of what most people can comfortably pocket carry, though some carry it in jacket pockets with a proper holster. For warm-weather carry under minimal clothing, the G43X or LCP Max may be more practical. For most other carry situations, the G19’s capacity and shootability advantages over smaller guns make the slightly more intentional concealment worthwhile.

Competition and Training

The G19 is a staple of USPSA Production division competition and dominates law enforcement training programs. The combination of stock trigger, reliable operation, and competition-legal capacity makes it competitive in Production without modification. The vast aftermarket means a competition G19 can be incrementally upgraded over time without replacing the pistol. For new shooters, the G19’s combination of manageable size, low recoil, and Glock’s simple manual of arms makes it one of the best training pistols available at any price point. Learning to shoot a G19 well translates to competence on virtually every other striker-fired pistol.
