Hollow Point vs. FMJ: Why It Matters for Self-Defense

Full metal jacket (FMJ) ammunition drives straight through soft tissue with minimal expansion, which is ideal for range practice and military use under the Hague Convention but poorly suited for civilian self-defense. A hollow point projectile has a cavity in the nose that fills with fluid on impact, causing the bullet to expand and slow dramatically. This expansion creates a wider wound channel, transfers more energy to the target, and reduces the risk of over-penetration — meaning the bullet is less likely to pass through the target and endanger bystanders. For any defensive firearm, hollow points are the correct choice.

Top Self-Defense Ammo Lines

Federal HST is widely considered the benchmark for defensive 9mm and .45 ACP performance, with consistent expansion and excellent penetration depth in FBI protocol testing. Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty are designed for sub-compact and full-size defensive pistols respectively, with Critical Duty optimized for barrier penetration. Speer Gold Dot uses a bonded core to prevent jacket separation during penetration. Winchester PDX1 Defender is used by multiple law enforcement agencies. Remington Golden Saber offers a brass-jacketed hollow point design with strong expansion. Any of these loads from a reputable manufacturer will outperform generic or foreign-made hollow points.

Caliber-Specific Recommendations

For 9mm, Federal HST 124gr +P or 147gr standard pressure are the most consistently recommended loads by instructors and law enforcement. For .45 ACP, Federal HST 230gr standard pressure is the gold standard. For .380 ACP — where bullet performance is more limited by velocity — Hornady Critical Defense 90gr FTX or Lehigh Defense Xtreme Penetrator are strong choices. For .38 Special in a snub-nose revolver, Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135gr +P is specifically engineered for short barrel velocity limitations. Match the load to your specific firearm and test for reliable feeding before carrying it.

5.56 and Rifle Hollow Points

Hollow point and soft point ammunition is also available for rifles. For home defense with an AR-15, 5.56mm hollow point loads reduce over-penetration risk compared to FMJ. Winchester 64gr bonded soft point, Federal 55gr Fusion, and Hornady 55gr V-MAX are commonly recommended defensive rifle loads. Note that standard 5.56 FMJ also fragments reliably at rifle velocities, which provides some of the same stopping effect — this is a nuanced topic and load selection should be based on your specific home defense scenario.

Testing Your Defensive Load

Never carry a defensive load you haven’t tested in your specific firearm. Some pistols, particularly those with tight chambers or feed ramp geometries, will fail to feed certain hollow point profiles. Run at least 50 rounds — preferably 100 — of your chosen defensive load through your carry gun without a malfunction before trusting it for self-defense. If you experience any failures to feed or eject with your defensive load, switch to a different profile before carrying.
