Benelli Announces the M2-G1: A New Gas-Operated Tactical Shotgun

Posted by Thomas on Aug 18th 2026

Benelli just did something it's done only once before: build a shotgun that doesn't run on inertia. The new M2-G1, officially introduced August 17, 2026, is a gas-operated tactical 12-gauge aimed at defensive professionals, law enforcement, and serious tactical shooters — and despite sharing a name with the inertia-driven M2, it runs on an entirely different action.

What Is the Benelli M2-G1?

The M2-G1 is a new tactical shotgun platform, not a variant of the existing M2 Field or M2 Tactical. It's chambered in 12 gauge for both 2 3/4-inch and 3-inch shells, built on an 18.5-inch barrel, and equipped with ghost-ring iron sights, a Picatinny rail, and an M-LOK compatible forend. Benelli positioned it as a more accessible gas-operated alternative to the military-specification M4, built specifically for civilian defensive and law enforcement use.

The New RPO Gas System, Explained

The headline feature is the operating system itself: Rear Piston Operated (RPO), a new dual-piston gas design that self-regulates across a wide range of 12-gauge loads without adjustment. It's a different system from the ARGO gas system Benelli has used in the M4 since that platform's inception — meaning Benelli now runs three distinct operating systems across its shotgun lineup: inertia, ARGO, and RPO.

Five Launch Configurations

The M2-G1 launches in five configurations. Two use a fixed stock with a 13-inch length of pull, offered in 5+1 and 7+1 capacity. The other three step up to a 5-position adjustable stock in 7+1 capacity, available in Carbon Grey, FDE Cerakote, and MultiCam Black finishes. Every configuration ships with the same beveled loading port, enlarged controls, and Benelli Mobile choke compatibility.

How It Fits Into Benelli's Lineup

Benelli's tactical shotgun lineup now spans three distinct platforms. The M4 remains the military-proven flagship, built around the ARGO system and carrying the USMC's M1014 service record. The M2 Tactical keeps things simple with Benelli's inertia system in an 18.5-inch defensive configuration. The M2-G1 slots in as the newest option — a purpose-built gas gun for buyers who want gas reliability without the M4's price tag or full military specification.
