What Is the MAC-11?

The MAC-11 (Military Armament Corporation Model 11) was originally designed by Gordon Ingram in the 1970s as a compact submachine gun. The civilian semi-automatic versions made by MasterPiece Arms retain the iconic MAC platform — compact rectangular receiver, top-cocking handle, open-bolt-style aesthetics — in a legal semi-automatic format. MasterPiece Arms is the direct successor company to Military Armament Corporation and is the only manufacturer with the legitimate heritage to produce MAC-style firearms today.

MAC-10 vs. MAC-11: What’s the Difference?

The MAC-10 was chambered in .45 ACP or 9mm with a larger frame. The MAC-11 was chambered in .380 ACP or 9mm with a smaller, more compact frame. In today’s market, the terms are used interchangeably by most people to refer to any MAC-style pistol. MPA’s current Defender series is chambered in 9mm and most closely resembles the MAC-11 in size and configuration.

Model Guide

MPA Defender (5.5" barrel, top-cocking) — The standard Defender in black finish. Top-cocking handle, 30-round magazine, open sights. The most accessible entry point into the MPA lineup.

MPA Defender MAC11 Type (6" threaded barrel) — Side-cocking variant with a 6" threaded barrel and Picatinny rail. The threaded barrel makes this the ideal suppressor-host configuration. One of our most popular MPA models.

MPA 30T Defender MAC11 Type (5.5" threaded barrel, Black Cerakote) — Top-cocking with a threaded barrel and Black Cerakote finish for improved durability and appearance. Includes a carry case. Our premium MAC-11 style option.

Why the MAC-11 for Suppressor Use?

The MAC platform is one of the all-time great suppressor hosts. The top or side-cocking design keeps the action away from the suppressor, the 9mm caliber runs excellently with subsonic ammunition, and the compact overall length even with a suppressor attached makes it a genuinely handy package. If you’re looking for a 9mm pistol specifically to run suppressed, the MPA Defender with a threaded barrel is one of the best options on the market.

Terminology: MAC-11, MAC 11, Mack 11, MPA

These all refer to the same thing. MAC-11, MAC 11, Mack 11, and MPA Defender are all commonly used names for MasterPiece Arms’ semi-automatic MAC-style 9mm pistols. If you searched any of these terms, you’re in the right place.

Legal Considerations

MPA Defender pistols are classified as pistols under federal law — standard background check, no NFA registration required. Adding a vertical foregrip creates an AOW requiring NFA registration ($5 tax stamp). Adding a stock creates an SBR requiring NFA Form 4 ($200 tax stamp). A pistol stabilizing brace is legal without NFA registration. All MPA Defenders ship to your local FFL dealer.
