Wells Marine Inc., now part of the Orbital ATK (now Northrop Grumman) supply chain, was historically a significant manufacturer of the M27 metallic disintegrating links used for 5.56x45mm belt-fed ammunition.
Function: M27 links are used in belt-fed firearms such as the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), FN Minimi, and compatible commercial platforms like the FightLite MCR. They hold 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition for automatic fire.
Wells Marine Role: For many years, Valentec-Wells/Wells Marine (based in California) was understood to be the primary, or sole, manufacturer of these links in the United States.
Acquisition: The ammunition link manufacturing operation was later acquired by ATK (Alliant Techsystems) and moved to the US Government's Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.
