Kydex Holsters

Kydex is a thermoformed acrylic-PVC alloy used in the most widely trusted concealed carry and duty holsters on the market. Molded precisely to specific firearm models, Kydex holsters provide consistent retention, complete trigger guard coverage, and zero degradation from sweat, moisture, or daily use. Why Kydex Became the Standard

Kydex replaced leather as the dominant carry holster material for several practical reasons. It is thermoformed to a specific firearm model — the retention click is consistent every single draw, unlike leather that varies as it breaks in. It protects the trigger guard completely on all sides, a safety critical feature for appendix carry. It is unaffected by sweat, rain, or humidity that can deform leather or cause metal hardware to rust. And it requires no break-in period — it works correctly from the first day. For duty use, Kydex's ability to integrate with active retention devices (hood locks, thumb levers) made it the natural choice for law enforcement holster manufacturers like Safariland.

Kydex vs. Leather: When Each Is Better

Kydex is better for: appendix carry where trigger protection is paramount, duty and law enforcement use requiring active retention, competition shooting requiring consistent draw timing, and any application where moisture or heavy use is a factor. Leather is better for: professional or dress environments where appearance matters, shooters who prefer the traditional feel and gradual break-in, and outside-the-waistband carry where the leather backing's comfort against clothing is noticeable. Many experienced carriers own both — Kydex for everyday carry and leather for specific dress situations.

Retention Adjustment

Quality Kydex holsters include a retention adjustment screw that controls how firmly the holster grips the firearm. This is typically a single Phillips head screw that increases or decreases the tension on the trigger guard area. Proper retention allows the firearm to stay securely in the holster through vigorous movement — including running, bending, and physical struggle — while releasing cleanly on a deliberate draw. Start with the factory setting and adjust in small increments, testing with the gun unloaded after each adjustment. If the firearm falls out when you shake the inverted holster, retention is too loose.

Model-Specific Fit: Why It Matters

Kydex holsters are made for specific firearm models, not general size categories. A holster made for a Glock 19 will not properly fit a Glock 17 — the dimensions differ enough to affect retention and safety. Always verify the exact make, model, and generation compatibility before purchasing. If your pistol has a weapon-mounted light (WML) or factory optic, you need a light-bearing or optics-cut holster specifically designed for that combination. Running a standard holster with a light attached creates a dangerous fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kydex safe for carry?
Yes — Kydex is the most trusted carry holster material for safety-conscious carriers precisely because it fully covers the trigger guard on all sides, preventing any external object from contacting the trigger during holstering or carry. This makes it particularly well-suited for appendix carry where the muzzle points toward the body.

Will Kydex scratch my gun's finish?
Kydex can produce minor finish wear on pistols carried and drawn frequently over time, primarily on the muzzle and slide areas that contact the holster body. This is cosmetic only and does not affect function. Cerakote and DuraCoat finishes are more resistant to wear than standard blued or parkerized finishes.

Does Impact Guns carry Kydex holsters?
Yes. Impact Guns carries Kydex holsters for all major pistol platforms at our Ogden and Boise stores and ships nationwide. See our Safariland and Alien Gear pages for specific brand options.
