Active Retention: Why It Matters for Duty Use

A duty holster must retain the firearm against an active attempt to remove it — a suspect grabbing the officer's gun is a documented and recurring threat in law enforcement. Passive retention (friction only) is insufficient for this environment. Active retention devices require a deliberate motion to defeat before the gun can be drawn — a motion trained into muscle memory but not intuitive to an untrained person grabbing the holster. This additional step is the difference between a firearm remaining in the officer's control and a potentially lethal disarming. Every serious duty holster includes at least Level II active retention.

Safariland ALS vs. SLS: Understanding the Systems

Safariland's ALS (Automatic Locking System) locks the firearm automatically on holstering via a locking block that engages the ejection port. To draw, a thumb lever on the rear of the holster body is swept rearward during the natural draw stroke — the motion is fast and intuitive after training. The SLS (Self Locking System) uses a rotating hood that covers the back of the slide and must be rotated forward to clear before drawing. The SLS provides Level III retention when combined with the ALS. Most agencies specify one or the other based on department policy. For civilian duty and security use, the ALS alone providing Level II is the most commonly recommended starting point.

Holster Fit: Model-Specific Matters More for Duty

Duty holsters are manufactured to exact firearm model specifications — the retention mechanisms engage specific features of the slide, ejection port, or trigger guard. A holster made for a Glock 17 will not properly retain a Glock 19, even though the pistols are similar. If your duty pistol has a weapon-mounted light (WML), you need a light-bearing duty holster specifically designed for that pistol and light combination. Running a non-light-bearing holster with a light attached is dangerous. Verify exact model compatibility including generation, barrel length, and any accessories before purchasing.

Duty Belt Integration

Most duty holsters are designed to attach to a duty belt system — a wide (typically 2.25-inch) belt worn over a trouser belt. The holster attaches via a Safariland belt loop, UBL (Universal Belt Loop), or similar mounting hardware. Ensure your holster's mounting hardware matches your duty belt system. For plainclothes or security use without a full duty belt, Safariland and others produce versions with standard 1.5–1.75-inch belt loop attachments.
