Kel-tec KSG

The Kel-Tec KSG is a 12-gauge bullpup shotgun with a design unlike anything else on the market—dual magazine tubes running beneath the barrel hold up to 14 rounds of 2¾″ shells, selectable by a manual switch behind the trigger guard. At just 26.1″ overall with an 18.5″ barrel, the KSG packs full-size shotgun capacity into a compact platform that’s earned a loyal following among home defense shooters and collectors alike since its 2011 introduction.

How Does the KSG’s Dual-Tube Magazine System Work?

The KSG has two parallel magazine tubes beneath the barrel, each holding 7 rounds of 2¾″ shells (6 with 3″ shells). A selector switch behind the trigger guard feeds from the left tube, right tube, or neither—the center position functions as a manual safety by preventing feeding. Shooters can run one tube completely dry, then flip the selector to the second tube without reloading. This allows loading different ammunition types in each tube—for example, buckshot in one and slugs in the other—and switching between them based on the situation. Mastering the selector switch under stress takes deliberate practice but adds a genuine tactical capability.

KSG vs. KSG-25: Which Kel-Tec Bullpup Shotgun Is Right for You?

Kel-Tec later introduced the KSG-25, an elongated variant with a 30.5″ barrel and dual tubes holding 12 rounds each for a total of 24+1 capacity. The KSG-25 is a range and competition gun—its length makes it unwieldy for home defense. The standard KSG’s 26.1″ overall length is its primary advantage: it handles in tight spaces like hallways and stairwells where a conventional 18.5″ barrel pump gun would measure 37″ or longer. If compactness and maneuverability are your priorities, the standard KSG is the right choice. If raw capacity at the range or in 3-Gun competition is the goal, the KSG-25 is worth a look.

Is the KSG Reliable? What New Owners Should Know

The KSG has a reputation as a shooter-sensitive design. Short-stroking the pump—not fully cycling the action—is the most common cause of malfunctions, and it happens more often with the KSG than a traditional pump gun because the bullpup layout requires a shorter, more deliberate pumping motion. New KSG owners should run at least 100–200 rounds through the gun to break it in and develop consistent pump technique before relying on it for defense. The action should be cycled firmly and completely every time. Guns that have been properly broken in and operated with good technique are generally reliable; most KSG malfunction reports trace back to short-stroking.

Home Defense With the KSG: Pros and Cons

The KSG’s strengths for home defense are its compact length and high capacity—14 rounds of 00 buckshot in a package shorter than most pistol-grip-only shotguns is a genuine advantage in confined spaces. Its weaknesses are the manual selector that must be managed during a reload, the shooter-sensitive pump action, and a trigger that sits farther back than conventional shotguns, requiring a different grip for some shooters. The top Picatinny rail accepts lights and red dot sights. For a shooter willing to invest in training and familiarization, the KSG is a capable home defense tool. For a shooter who wants a point-and-shoot pump gun with minimal manual-of-arms complexity, a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 is a better fit.

What Accessories Work With the KSG?

The KSG ships with a full-length top Picatinny rail, making red dot and holographic sight mounting straightforward. A weapon light is strongly recommended—the Streamlight TLR-1 mounts easily via the front rail sections. The downward ejection port (shells eject straight down between the shooter’s hands) is unusual and worth noting for left-handed shooters—the KSG is genuinely ambidextrous in this regard. Aftermarket support includes extended magazine tubes from Kel-Tec, improved trigger kits, and various stock pad options. Sling attachment points are built into the design, and most two-point slings attach without modification.
