The Inertia System
Benelli’s inertia-driven system is elegantly simple. When the shotgun fires, the inertia of the bolt body compresses a spring against the bolt head, which is locked into the barrel extension. When the spring releases, it drives the bolt rearward to eject the spent shell and then forward to chamber the next round. The entire system has two primary moving parts—vastly fewer than gas-operated designs—which means less to clean, less to fail, and less weight. The tradeoff is that inertia guns require some load momentum to cycle reliably, making them better suited to standard and magnum loads than ultra-light target loads. For hunting and defensive use, this is rarely a limitation.
Benelli M4—The Military Standard
The M4 is the only Benelli that uses a different operating system—a short-stroke gas piston system developed specifically for the U.S. military JSCS (Joint Service Combat Shotgun) program. The gas system was chosen because it cycles more reliably with the full range of military-issue ammunition, including reduced-recoil loads that inertia guns may not cycle consistently. The M4 is the standard-issue combat shotgun for the U.S. Marine Corps and numerous NATO forces. The civilian M4 is mechanically identical to the military version, available with fixed or collapsible stock configurations. It is produced in 12 gauge only.
Benelli M2—The Versatile Field Gun
The M2 is Benelli’s most versatile hunting and competition shotgun—an inertia-driven semi-automatic available in 12 gauge and 20 gauge with a wide range of barrel lengths and stock configurations. The M2 Tactical is the defensive variant with an 18.5” barrel and ghost ring sights. The M2 Field is the hunting configuration. The M2 3-Gun is optimized for practical shooting competition. For hunters who want one shotgun that handles upland birds, waterfowl, and turkey with different choke and load selections, the M2 in the appropriate gauge is the benchmark inertia field gun.
Super Black Eagle 3—The Waterfowl Standard
The Super Black Eagle 3 is Benelli’s flagship waterfowl gun—the only production shotgun that reliably cycles every 12 gauge load from the lightest 2.75” target loads through the heaviest 3.5” magnum steel shot loads in a single platform. The SBE3 adds Benelli’s ComforTech recoil reduction system, a larger trigger guard for gloved use, and an improved stock geometry over the SBE2. Available in 12 gauge and 20 gauge. For serious waterfowl hunters who run the full range of loads through a single gun across multiple seasons, the SBE3 is the definitive choice.
Benelli Ethos—Premium Field Shooting
The Ethos is Benelli’s premium field gun—an inertia-driven semi-automatic with an engraved nickel receiver, AA-grade walnut or carbon fiber stock, and the most refined action feel in the Benelli lineup. The Ethos uses a progressive comfort system that reduces felt recoil through stock flex, making it more comfortable for all-day upland hunting than any other inertia gun Benelli produces. Available in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410 bore. For wing shooters who want the best-looking and most comfortable Benelli field gun, the Ethos covers the full gauge range.
Benelli Gauge Options: 12, 20, 28 & .410
Benelli produces shotguns across four gauges, with availability varying by model. 12 gauge covers the entire lineup—M4, M2, SBE3, Ethos, Nova, SuperNova, and Montefeltro are all available in 12 gauge. 20 gauge is available in the M2, SBE3, Ethos, and Montefeltro—appropriate for youth and smaller-framed hunters, or experienced hunters who prefer the lighter carry weight of a 20 gauge field gun with modern 3” loads that approach 12 gauge performance. 28 gauge and .410 bore are available in the Ethos only—purpose-built for upland hunting with small-bore loads and sporting clays where the smaller gauges are required or preferred. The M4 is produced exclusively in 12 gauge given its military and tactical role.
