AR-10 vs. AR-15: Key Differences

The AR-10 uses the same basic operating system and ergonomics as the AR-15 but is scaled up for larger cartridges. Key differences: the AR-10 is heavier (typically 8–10 lbs vs. 6–7 lbs for an AR-15), magazines are not interchangeable, and parts compatibility between different AR-10 manufacturers is limited. If you already shoot AR-15s, the manual of arms transfers immediately — the platforms feel very similar to operate.

Caliber Options

.308 Winchester / 7.62x51 NATO — The dominant AR-10 caliber and the right choice for most buyers. Excellent ammo selection for hunting and target shooting, proven accuracy to 800+ yards, and available in a huge range of platforms.

6.5 Creedmoor — Better long-range ballistics than .308 with less recoil. Increasingly popular for precision rifle competition and long-range hunting. Several quality AR-10 platforms are available in 6.5 Creedmoor.

8.6 Blackout — A newer suppressor-optimized cartridge gaining traction. Q’s The Fix in 8.6 BLK is an innovative example of where the platform is heading.
