AK-47 Magazines

AK-47 magazine selection matters more than on any other rifle platform — the difference between a quality steel or reinforced polymer magazine and a cheap stamped-steel aftermarket magazine is often the difference between a reliable AK and one that jams. Impact Guns carries AK magazines from Magpul, US Palm, Circle 10, Bulgarian surplus, Croatian surplus, Romanian surplus, and other proven sources in 7.62x39mm, 5.56 NATO, and 5.45x39mm for every AK-pattern rifle and pistol we sell.

Steel vs. Polymer AK Magazines

The original AK magazine is stamped steel with a distinctive waffle or slab-side pattern — heavy, durable, and proven across decades of military service. Military surplus steel magazines from Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, and other former Soviet-bloc countries are the gold standard for reliability and are often the most affordable option. Modern polymer magazines from Magpul (PMAG AK) and US Palm reduce weight significantly while maintaining feed reliability. Both work; the choice comes down to weight preference, budget, and whether you value the look and feel of steel or the lighter weight of polymer.

Magpul PMAG AK: The Modern Standard

The Magpul PMAG 30 AK/AKM (MOE) is the most popular aftermarket AK magazine in production — a reinforced polymer body with a steel locking lug and constant-curve internal geometry designed for reliable feeding across all AK-pattern rifles. The PMAG is lighter than steel, drops free on a standard AK mag release, and has a dust/impact cover for storage. GEN M3 PMAGs are the current version and fit the widest range of AK receivers.

Military Surplus Magazines

Bulgarian Circle 10 waffle magazines are widely considered the best surplus AK magazines ever produced — heavy-duty reinforced polymer with steel reinforcement and a reputation for flawless reliability. Croatian steel magazines (BHO pattern) are excellent and widely available. Romanian steel surplus magazines are the most affordable reliable option. Hungarian and Polish surplus magazines appear periodically. When buying surplus, inspect the feed lips for damage and the locking lugs for wear.

AK Magazine Compatibility

Standard AK-47/AKM magazines in 7.62x39mm fit virtually all 7.62x39 AK-pattern rifles: WASR-10, Zastava ZPAP M70, Pioneer Arms Sporter, and most other imported and domestic AK rifles. AK-74 magazines (5.45x39mm) are a different pattern and do not interchange with 7.62x39 magazines. 5.56 NATO AK magazines (for rifles like the Zastava M85) use yet another pattern. Always match the magazine to your rifle’s chambering.

Magazine Capacity: 10, 20, 30, 40, and Drums

30-round magazines are the standard AK capacity and the most common. 40-round RPK-pattern magazines provide extended capacity at the cost of additional weight and length. 10-round magazines are available for restricted states and bench shooting. AK drum magazines (75-round) are available for recreational use, though they add substantial weight and bulk.

AK Pistol Magazines

AK pistols like the Pioneer Arms Hellpup, Micro Hellpup, and Draco use standard AK-47 magazines — a 30-round magazine in an AK pistol extends well below the grip but functions identically to the same magazine in a rifle. Some shooters prefer 20-round magazines in AK pistols for a more balanced handling profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AK-47 magazine?
Bulgarian Circle 10 (surplus polymer) and Magpul PMAG AK (new production polymer) are the two most recommended. Croatian and Romanian steel surplus are excellent budget options.

Do all AK-47 magazines fit all AK-47 rifles?
Standard 7.62x39mm AK/AKM magazines fit virtually all 7.62x39 AK-pattern rifles. Some receivers have tighter or looser mag wells — try your magazines in your specific rifle before buying in bulk.

Are surplus AK magazines reliable?
Military surplus magazines from established countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania) are generally more proven than new-production budget magazines. Inspect feed lips and locking lugs before use.

Can I use AK-47 magazines in an AK pistol?
Yes — standard AK-47 magazines work in AK pistols like the Hellpup and Draco.
