What Is the Hellpup?
The Pioneer Arms Hellpup is a semi-automatic AK-pattern pistol chambered in 7.62x39mm, manufactured at the Pioneer Arms factory in Radom, Poland. “Hellpup” is Pioneer Arms’ brand name for their AK pistol line. It uses standard AK-47 magazines, operates on the proven long-stroke gas piston system, and delivers full 7.62x39 performance in a pistol-classified package. It is legally classified as a pistol because it lacks a stock and has a barrel under 16 inches.
Hellpup Model Guide
Hellpup Standard (11.73" barrel) — The original and most popular Hellpup configuration. Available in wood furniture (oil-varnished Polish laminated handguard and grip) and polymer variants. The longer 11.73" barrel delivers better velocity and a more balanced feel than shorter AK pistols.
Core Hellpup (7" threaded barrel) — The most compact Hellpup. Black finish, Picatinny quad rail, threaded barrel for suppressor or muzzle device use. Optimized for a modern tactical setup.
Hellpup Micro Pro (7" barrel) — Pioneer Arms’ most compact pistol. The Micro Pro designation indicates their latest generation of refined fit and finish on the shorter platform.
Hellpup vs. Draco: How They Compare
Both are AK-pattern pistols in 7.62x39mm and the most common comparison buyers make. The key difference is origin and quality tier: the Hellpup is Polish-manufactured at a proper arsenal-grade facility; the Draco is Romanian-manufactured by Century Arms. Most experienced AK buyers consider the Hellpup to have a slight edge in fit, finish, and overall construction quality. The Draco is more widely available and typically priced lower. Both are excellent — the Hellpup is the premium choice.
Terminology: Hellpup, Hellpup Draco, Micro Hellpup
People searching “Hellpup Draco” are typically looking for AK pistols in general — it’s a common search combining the two most popular AK pistol brands. “Micro Hellpup” refers to the shorter-barrel Hellpup variants. If you searched any of these terms, you’re in the right place.
Legal Considerations
The Hellpup is classified as a pistol under federal law — standard background check, no NFA registration required. Adding a vertical foregrip creates an AOW requiring NFA registration. Adding a stock creates an SBR requiring NFA Form 4. A pistol stabilizing brace is legal without NFA registration. Ships to your local FFL dealer.
