Hornady
Hornady Manufacturing is one of America’s most innovative ammunition manufacturers—a family-owned company founded in Grand Island, Nebraska in 1949 that has repeatedly changed the industry with purpose-engineered bullet designs for specific applications. From the Critical Defense hollow point that defined the modern defensive ammunition category, to the ELD-X and ELD Match hunting and precision bullets that use heat-resistant polymer tips for consistency at long range, to the LEVERevolution flex-tip bullets that made lever-action rifles viable at extended distances, Hornady builds ammunition to solve specific problems rather than simply match generic specifications.

Hornady Critical Defense: The Defensive Ammunition Standard
Hornady Critical Defense is specifically engineered for short-barrel defensive pistols—a problem most hollow point ammunition doesn’t address. Standard hollow points can clog with clothing fibers, drywall, or other material before reaching tissue, preventing expansion. Critical Defense uses a Flex Tip polymer insert in the hollow point cavity that initiates expansion on contact regardless of what the bullet passed through first. It’s designed for the 3–4″ barrels of compact and subcompact carry guns where velocity is lower than test-barrel specs. For concealed carry in .380 ACP, 9mm, .38 Special, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, Critical Defense remains one of the most widely recommended defensive loads.
Hornady Critical Duty: The Duty Ammunition Counterpart
Critical Duty is Hornady’s law enforcement and duty counterpart to Critical Defense. Where Critical Defense optimizes for short barrels and concealed carry, Critical Duty optimizes for FBI protocol penetration standards and barrier performance—meaning it maintains reliable expansion after passing through auto glass, car doors, plywood, and heavy clothing. Critical Duty is loaded to higher pressure and uses the FlexLock bullet rather than Critical Defense’s FTX. For full-size duty pistols and anyone who wants ammunition engineered to FBI protocol specifications, Critical Duty is the appropriate choice over Critical Defense.
Hornady ELD-X and ELD Match: Long-Range Hunting and Precision
The Hornady ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) is a hunting bullet designed specifically for long-range performance where standard hunting bullets lose their polymer tips from aerodynamic heating at high velocities. The ELD-X uses a Heat Shield tip that maintains its shape at any velocity, providing consistent ballistic coefficients from muzzle to terminal. It’s available in Hornady’s Precision Hunter ammunition line in 6.5 Creedmoor, .308, .300 Win Mag, and other popular hunting cartridges. The ELD Match uses the same Heat Shield tip in a match-grade open-tip bullet designed for competition accuracy rather than terminal expansion, loaded in Hornady’s Match ammunition line.
American Gunner: Value Defensive Ammunition
Hornady American Gunner bridges the gap between bulk FMJ range ammunition and premium defensive hollow points, using the XTP (eXtreme Terminal Performance) bullet—a proven hollow point design with a long performance history—at a price point below Critical Defense. American Gunner is an excellent choice for shooters who want a quality hollow point for home defense and carry without the premium pricing of Critical Defense, or for those who want to train with the same defensive load they carry at a more accessible cost.
Hornady LEVERevolution: Flex-Tip for Lever-Action Rifles
Hornady LEVERevolution solved a problem that had limited lever-action rifle performance for over a century: tube magazines require flat or round-nose bullets for safety (pointed bullets could detonate primers in the magazine under recoil), but flat-nose bullets have poor ballistic coefficients and lose velocity quickly. LEVERevolution’s Flex Tip polymer-tipped bullets are safe in tube magazines because the soft tip compresses rather than denting the primer. The result is a .30-30, .35 Remington, .45-70, or .444 Marlin load with a pointed bullet and ballistic coefficient improvements of 40% or more over traditional flat-nose loads—extending effective range by 50–100 yards on deer-sized game.
