Speer Ammo
Speer Ammunition is one of America’s most trusted defensive ammunition manufacturers—best known for the Gold Dot hollow point, which has been adopted by more U.S. law enforcement agencies than any other defensive load. Founded in 1943 and based in Lewiston, Idaho, Speer produces both the Gold Dot defensive line and the Lawman range training line, allowing shooters to train with the same bullet profile they carry for defense. Speer’s bonded bullet construction prevents jacket separation during penetration through barriers—a critical advantage in real-world defensive scenarios.

Gold Dot: The Law Enforcement Standard
The Speer Gold Dot is the most widely issued duty defensive ammunition in U.S. law enforcement, carried by thousands of departments nationwide including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and major metropolitan police agencies. Its uni-core bonded construction electrochemically bonds the jacket to the lead core, preventing the jacket separation that can occur when a bullet passes through auto glass, clothing, or other barriers before reaching tissue. Gold Dot is available in standard and short barrel (+P) configurations—the Gold Dot Short Barrel line is specifically loaded and designed for the 3–4″ barrels of compact carry pistols, ensuring reliable expansion at the lower velocities these barrels produce. For 9mm defensive carry, Gold Dot 124 gr +P and 147 gr standard pressure are consistently among the top recommendations.
Gold Dot G2: Second Generation Performance
The Speer Gold Dot G2 is the second generation of the Gold Dot design, featuring a shallow dish at the tip of the hollow point cavity filled with a Consistent-Performance elastomer. Under impact, this elastomer initiates the expansion sequence, producing more consistent mushrooming across a wider range of barriers and impact velocities than the original Gold Dot. The G2 was adopted as the standard FBI duty load when it was introduced, replacing the earlier Gold Dot in many agency specifications. For shooters who want the most current Speer defensive technology, the G2 represents the evolution of their flagship design.
Lawman: Training with Your Carry Bullet Profile
Speer Lawman is the range training companion to Gold Dot—it uses a total metal jacket (TMJ) bullet that encloses the lead core completely (including the base) to reduce airborne lead at indoor ranges, at a price point designed for high-volume training. The Lawman is designed to replicate the point of impact and felt recoil of Gold Dot loads so that shooters who carry Gold Dot can train extensively with Lawman and know their zero and recoil management transfers directly. For serious defensive shooters who want to avoid the cost of training with premium defensive hollow points, Lawman is the practical solution for maintaining proficiency with the same ballistic profile.
