Why a Dedicated .22 LR AR-15?
A .22 LR conversion bolt (like the CMMG kit) drops into your existing AR-15 upper and lets you shoot .22 LR, but it won’t lock the bolt back on the last round and can’t match the reliability of a purpose-built .22 system. The Tippmann M4-22 is built from the ground up as a .22 LR — the bolt, barrel, and magazine are all designed specifically for rimfire, delivering last-round bolt hold-open (LRBHO) on every magazine, consistent feeding, and a manual of arms identical to a centerfire AR-15 including the bolt catch, magazine release, safety, and charging handle.
Mil-Spec AR-15 Compatibility
The M4-22’s receivers match mil-spec AR-15 dimensions, meaning standard AR-15 stocks, buffer tubes, pistol grips, handguards, and most triggers drop in without modification. M4-22 vs. S&W M&P 15-22
The S&W M&P 15-22 is the other major dedicated .22 LR AR-15. The M&P 15-22 uses a polymer receiver (lighter but not mil-spec compatible for furniture swaps), while the Tippmann M4-22 uses aluminum receivers that accept standard AR-15 parts. For maximum parts compatibility with your centerfire AR-15 setup, the Tippmann is the better choice. For a lighter, less expensive .22 AR that works well out of the box, the M&P 15-22 is excellent.
Ammunition and Reliability
The M4-22 runs reliably with standard and high-velocity .22 LR (CCI Mini-Mag, Federal AutoMatch, Aguila Super Extra). Like all .22 LR semi-autos, subsonic and bulk-pack ammunition may require a break-in period. The 25-round proprietary magazines are the only feed option — standard AR-15 magazines do not work with the .22 LR bolt system.
