Smith & Wesson Response

The Smith & Wesson Response is S&W’s entry into the 9mm pistol-caliber carbine market — a 16.5″-barrel semi-automatic carbine with full AR-style controls, compatibility with Glock-pattern 9mm magazines, and the familiar manual of arms that millions of AR shooters already know. Announced in 2023, the Response fills the gap between S&W’s handgun lineup and their rifle lineup, giving home defenders and range shooters a 9mm long gun that pairs naturally with a Glock, Sig P320, or other Glock-compatible 9mm pistol.

S&W Response vs. S&W FPC: Two Different Approaches

Smith & Wesson offers two 9mm carbines with very different design philosophies. The M&P FPC (Folding Pistol Carbine) uses M&P Shield magazines and folds compactly for storage and transport — it’s optimized for home defense and concealment in a bag or vehicle. The Response uses Glock-pattern magazines and AR-style controls — it’s optimized for shooters who want the familiar AR manual of arms and the ability to share magazines with Glock pistols. Choose the FPC for compact home defense storage. Choose the Response for range use, competition, or if you already run Glock 9mm magazines. See: S&W FPC.

Glock Magazine Compatibility: Practical Implications

The S&W Response accepts Glock-pattern double-stack 9mm magazines, which is one of the most available and affordable magazine formats in existence. Standard Glock 17 17-round magazines, Glock 19 15-round magazines, Glock 33-round magazines, and aftermarket Magpul PMAG GL9 magazines all function in the Response. For shooters who already carry a Glock pistol, the Response creates a genuine ammunition and magazine commonality setup — one caliber, one magazine format, two platforms. This commonality has practical value for home defense where simplifying your ammunition supply reduces logistics complexity.

S&W Response Specs and Features

The Response features a 16.5″ barrel, an overall length of approximately 32.5″, and a weight of around 6.3 lbs unloaded. It uses a blowback operating system standard for pistol-caliber carbines, a collapsible stock, M-LOK handguard for accessory mounting, and a Picatinny top rail for optic mounting. The AR-style controls — magazine release, bolt catch, charging handle, and safety — are positioned identically to a standard AR-15, making the transition from rifle to carbine (or vice versa) immediate for experienced AR shooters. The Response ships with one magazine.

9mm PCC for Home Defense: The Case for the Response

A 9mm pistol-caliber carbine like the Response offers several practical advantages for home defense compared to a rifle-caliber AR-15. The 9mm cartridge produces significantly less over-penetration through walls than 5.56 or .300 Blackout, which matters in homes with adjacent rooms or close neighbors. The longer barrel of the carbine improves 9mm velocity and accuracy compared to a pistol. The stock provides a third point of contact for more stable shooting under stress. And the reduced recoil makes fast, accurate follow-up shots easier than with a rifle caliber. For home defenders who want more than a pistol but are concerned about over-penetration, the Response is a compelling solution.

S&W Response for Competition

The Response competes in USPSA Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) division, where 9mm carbines with pistol-style magazines dominate. Its AR controls, optic rail, and M-LOK handguard make it competition-ready out of the box with the addition of a red dot or LPVO. The Glock magazine compatibility is a specific advantage in PCC competition, where Glock-pattern magazines have the deepest aftermarket for base pads and extensions.
