Steyr AUG A3: The Iconic Austrian Bullpup Rifle

The Steyr AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr — Army Universal Rifle) was adopted by the Austrian military in 1977 and has served with over 30 nations’ armed forces since. The AUG A3 M2 is the current civilian variant — a bullpup design that places the action behind the trigger group, resulting in a 16″ barrel in an overall length shorter than most 10″ AR-15 pistols. The AUG delivers exceptional balance, a genuinely excellent factory trigger for a bullpup, and the unique advantage of a folding vertical grip and integrated optic rail. It’s one of the most functional and recognizable rifles in the world.

Steyr ATC 9mm Pistol: Precision Engineering for Competition

The Steyr ATC (Advanced Tactical Carbine) series are 9mm pistols built on Steyr’s precision manufacturing heritage. The ATC 5″ and Rock ATC variants offer competition-ready features including a 5″ bull barrel, optics-ready slide, and superior factory ergonomics. Steyr pistols are known for their distinctive trapezoidal sights — a triangular front post and trapezoid rear — that allow extremely fast target acquisition. The ATC platform targets the competition segment directly, competing with Staccato and Shadow Systems in the premium competition pistol market.

Steyr Scout: Jeff Cooper’s Vision in Production Form

The Steyr Scout is the only rifle specifically designed around Colonel Jeff Cooper’s “Scout Rifle” concept — a bolt-action under 6.6 lbs, under 39″ overall, chambered in a medium-bore cartridge (typically .308 Win or 6.5 Creedmoor), with a forward-mounted scout scope. The Scout features a detachable box magazine, integral bipod, and spare magazine holder in the stock. It remains the definitive production scout rifle and is popular with hunters who want a compact, capable bolt gun for rough country where a traditional-length rifle is cumbersome.

Steyr AUG vs. Standard AR-15: The Bullpup Tradeoff

The AUG’s bullpup layout gives you a 16″ barrel in a package 6–8″ shorter than a standard AR-15 — a meaningful advantage in vehicles, tight spaces, or for any shooter who values compact overall length. The tradeoffs are a longer trigger pull due to the linkage system (though Steyr’s is among the best in class), limited aftermarket compared to the AR-15, and a higher price point. For buyers who want a capable carbine that’s genuinely different from an AR-15 and has proven military lineage, the AUG is the natural choice. See also our AR-15 rifles page for comparison.

Steyr Accessories, Ammunition & Related Pages

The Steyr AUG uses proprietary magazines, though adapters for STANAG/AR-15 magazines are available. The ATC 9mm pistol uses standard Steyr magazines and is compatible with major holster platforms. For ammunition, most Steyr rifles are chambered in 5.56 NATO or .308 Win. For other premium European firearms, see Tikka and Sako. For bullpup alternatives, see our Kel-Tec RDB page.
