IWI Tavor
The IWI Tavor is an Israeli bullpup rifle platform fielded by the Israel Defense Forces and manufactured by Israel Weapon Industries for civilian sale through IWI US. The Tavor family includes the X95 (the current IDF standard in 5.56 NATO and 9mm), the original Tavor SAR, and the Tavor 7 in .308 Winchester — all sharing the bullpup layout that places the action behind the trigger for a shorter overall length with no loss of barrel length. The result is a 16.5” barrel in an overall package just 26.1” long — comparable to a 10” AR-15 pistol with a brace, but in a legal rifle configuration requiring no NFA paperwork.

Tavor X95 vs. Tavor SAR: Which Model Should You Buy?
The Tavor SAR was the original U.S.-market Tavor — reliable, proven, with a large installed base and strong aftermarket support. The X95 is the current-generation upgrade: a shorter overall length (26.1” vs. 28.3”), a more modern ergonomic layout with a pistol-grip-style magazine release, improved trigger geometry, and a 13.5” barrel option in addition to the standard 16.5”. Most new buyers should choose the X95 — it’s the current IDF platform, has better ergonomics, and its aftermarket is catching up to the SAR. The SAR remains a strong choice for buyers who find it at a favorable price or who prefer its specific ergonomics.
Tavor X95 Bullpup Layout: The Practical Advantages
The Tavor’s bullpup configuration places the bolt carrier group behind the trigger group, moving the action rearward. With the same 16.5” barrel as a standard AR-15 rifle, the X95 is 10” shorter overall. This makes it exceptionally maneuverable in tight spaces — vehicles, hallways, and dense terrain — without the barrel-length penalty of a short-barrel configuration. The balance point is also rearward, which many shooters find more natural for one-handed manipulation. The downside is the ejection port location directly beside the shooter’s face, which makes the Tavor a right-handed design by default — though IWI offers a left-hand conversion kit.
Tavor 7 in .308: The Big-Bore Bullpup
The Tavor 7 brings .308 Winchester capability to the bullpup platform in a 26.5” overall length with a 16.5” barrel — significantly more compact than any standard .308 rifle. This makes it a compelling choice for hunters who want .308 performance in a highly portable package, and for home defense shooters who want rifle-caliber power in a maneuverable format. The .308’s recoil in the bullpup layout is manageable due to the in-line stock design that directs recoil straight back rather than rotating the muzzle up. The Tavor 7 uses PMAG 7.62 and similar .308 AR-pattern magazines.
Tavor X95 in 9mm: The PCC Option
The 9mm Tavor X95 is a pistol-caliber carbine variant that uses Colt-pattern 9mm magazines and runs the same bullpup layout as the 5.56 version. At around 25” overall with an 18” barrel, it delivers excellent 9mm ballistics — a full-length barrel wrings every available fps from the cartridge — in an extremely compact package. The 9mm X95 is popular for home defense (reduced overpenetration risk vs. rifle calibers), range fun, and suppressor use. Since January 1, 2026, the NFA $200 tax stamp has been eliminated, making suppressor configuration straightforward.
Tavor Trigger Upgrade: The Most Common Modification
The stock Tavor trigger has historically been the platform’s weakest point — long, heavy, and mushy compared to quality AR-15 triggers. Geissele Automatics produces the Super Sabra drop-in trigger specifically for the Tavor, reducing pull weight and improving feel dramatically. It’s the single most impactful upgrade for Tavor owners and widely considered essential for competitive or precision use. Budget approximately $240–$260 for the Geissele Super Sabra. With the upgraded trigger, the Tavor becomes a genuinely excellent precision platform rather than merely a compact and reliable one.
