Glock 34

The Glock 34 is Glock’s purpose-built competition pistol—a long-slide 9mm featuring a 5.31-inch barrel, extended sight radius, and a lighter trigger pull than the standard G17. Introduced in 1998 specifically for IPSC and USPSA competition, the G34 has dominated Production division competition for decades and remains the benchmark Glock for competitive shooting. With the Gen 5 G34 MOS adding factory optics capability, it’s also the natural choice for USPSA Carry Optics competitors who want the combination of Glock reliability and extended-slide accuracy.

Competition Advantages

The G34’s competition advantages over the standard G17 are real and measurable. The longer 5.31-inch barrel extracts more velocity from 9mm ammunition and provides a longer sight radius that makes precise aiming more forgiving—a small misalignment at the rear sight is magnified less over a longer distance to the front sight. The lighter trigger pull (typically 4.5 pounds vs. the standard G17’s 5.5) allows faster, more accurate trigger manipulation under speed. The extended slide also reduces muzzle flip slightly due to the longer reciprocating mass. For USPSA Production division competitors, the G34 Gen 5 is consistently among the top-performing stock pistols.

Gen 5 Improvements

The Gen 5 G34 brings the full suite of Gen 5 improvements to the competition platform: removal of finger grooves, flared magwell, ambidextrous slide stop, and the Marksman barrel that improves accuracy over earlier polygonal-rifled barrels. The G34 Gen 5 MOS adds a factory-milled optics cut for Carry Optics competitors who want a red dot on the long-slide platform. The combination of the Gen 5 Marksman barrel, factory optics cut, and 5.31-inch slide makes the G34 Gen 5 MOS one of the most capable factory competition pistols available at Glock’s price point.

USPSA Production vs. Carry Optics

The G34 is legal in both USPSA Production and Carry Optics divisions. In Production, the standard G34 Gen 5 with aftermarket trigger and sights competes at the top of the division. In Carry Optics, the G34 Gen 5 MOS with a red dot provides the longer-slide accuracy advantage of the G34 combined with optics-assisted target acquisition. For competitors who want to shoot both divisions with one pistol, the G34 Gen 5 MOS is a versatile choice—run it with irons in Production and add a red dot for Carry Optics. The factory optics cut allows switching without commitment to a permanent milling job.

G34 vs. G17 for Competition

For USPSA Production competitors choosing between a G17 and G34, the G34 is the better competition choice. The longer barrel and lighter trigger provide measurable advantages in the competition context where tenths of a second matter. The G34’s slightly larger overall size is a non-issue on competition stages. The only argument for the G17 in competition is if the shooter also wants to use the same pistol for carry—the G17 is more concealable. Dedicated competition shooters who keep separate competition and carry guns should choose the G34 without hesitation.

Duty and Training Use

Beyond competition, the G34 serves as an excellent training pistol due to its lighter trigger and longer sight radius. The extended slide makes it slightly less practical for duty carry compared to the G17, but agencies that issue it find the accuracy advantages worthwhile for training purposes. For civilian shooters who want the most accurate and easiest-to-shoot factory Glock in 9mm for range use and home defense without concealment concerns, the G34 offers more performance than the G17 at a comparable price.
