Automatic Knives

Automatic knives deploy the blade instantly with a button press or thumb slide — no two-hand opening, no thumb stud, no wrist flick required. From out-the-front (OTF) designs that fire the blade straight out the front of the handle to traditional side-opening switchblades, automatic knives combine one-handed speed with the reliability of a precision mechanism. Impact Guns carries automatic knives from the industry’s top makers including Microtech, Benchmade, and Pro-Tech.

OTF vs. Side-Opening Automatic Knives: Which Is Right for You?

Automatic knives come in two fundamental configurations. Out-the-front (OTF) knives deploy and retract the blade straight out the front of the handle via a sliding thumb switch — the blade moves in a linear track rather than rotating on a pivot. Side-opening automatics (switchblades) work like a folding knife but with a spring-assisted mechanism triggered by a button, deploying the blade on a pivot just like a folder. OTFs are slimmer and more pocketable; side-openers tend to be more robust and offer a wider variety of blade styles. Both are legal in most U.S. states for adults — check your local laws before purchasing.

Single Action vs. Double Action OTF Knives

Within the OTF category, single action designs deploy automatically when the thumb slide is pushed forward but retract manually by hand. Double action OTFs both deploy and retract automatically with the thumb slide — full one-handed operation in both directions. For EDC and tactical use, double action is almost universally preferred. Single action designs are simpler mechanically and slightly more robust, but the inability to retract one-handed is a meaningful limitation. Microtech’s Ultratech is the benchmark double action OTF; their UTX-70 is the compact single action alternative.

Microtech: The OTF Standard

Microtech defines the OTF knife category. Their Ultratech (full-size DA OTF), UTX-70 (compact SA OTF), and Combat Troodon (large DA OTF) are the most respected production automatic knives ever made. Microtech OTFs use CNC-machined aluminum handles, premium blade steels including M390 and CTS-204P, and mechanisms refined over decades of production. The fit, finish, and mechanism quality are unmatched in the production automatic knife market. Microtech commands a premium — it’s fully justified.

Benchmade Automatic Knives

Benchmade produces both OTF and side-opening automatics at their Oregon facility. Their Infidel is the flagship OTF — a double action design with a D2 or M390 blade in a machined aluminum handle, built to the same standard as their manual folders. Benchmade’s side-opening automatics like the 3300 Axis-Auto bring their legendary AXIS lock mechanism to the automatic format. For buyers who want American-made quality in an automatic knife, Benchmade is the alternative to Microtech.

Automatic Knife Blade Styles

Automatic knives are available in all major blade profiles. Drop point blades are the most versatile for EDC — a curved spine, full belly, and strong tip that handles everyday cutting tasks well. Tanto blades reinforce the tip for penetration and hard use. Dagger (double-edge) blades are the classic OTF profile — symmetrical and fast through material, but subject to additional legal restrictions in some jurisdictions. Clip point blades split the difference with a fine, controllable tip and strong belly. For general EDC, drop point. For tactical applications, tanto or dagger.

Automatic Knife Laws: What You Need to Know

Automatic knife laws vary significantly by state and municipality. Most U.S. states now permit adults to own and carry automatic knives, though blade length restrictions and concealed carry rules differ. Some states permit ownership but restrict carry length to 3” or less. A small number of states and cities maintain stricter restrictions. Always verify your state and local ordinances before purchasing or carrying an automatic knife. Impact Guns ships automatic knives in compliance with applicable federal and state law.
