Mossberg 940 Pro
The Mossberg 940 Pro is the most capable semi-automatic shotgun Mossberg has ever built — a gas-operated platform engineered to cycle anything from light target loads to heavy 3” magnums without adjustment, tuning, or break-in. Available in tactical, field, and competition configurations, the 940 Pro series has earned a reputation for out-of-box reliability that challenges guns costing significantly more. Whether you’re outfitting a home defense setup, heading to a three-gun match, or hunting waterfowl, there’s a 940 Pro built for the job.

What Makes the 940 Pro Different From Other Semi-Auto Shotguns
Most gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns require load-specific tuning — a light target load that cycles fine may cause issues with heavy hunting rounds, or vice versa. The 940 Pro’s self-regulating gas system eliminates that problem entirely. It meters gas pressure automatically based on the load, cycling reliably across the full spectrum from 1-oz. target loads to 3” magnum steel shot without changing any settings. Mossberg also pre-fit the barrel and receiver to tighter tolerances than previous models and included a larger loading port for faster reloads. The result is a shotgun that’s genuinely competition-ready without any out-of-box tuning.
Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical: Home Defense Configuration
The 940 Pro Tactical is the home defense and law enforcement variant — 18.5” barrel, 7+1 capacity, and an optics-ready receiver drilled and tapped to accept a red dot directly without a rail adapter. It ships with a fiber optic front sight and adjustable white-dot rear, giving you a usable iron sight picture right out of the box. The receiver accepts most common micro red dot footprints for direct mounting. Cylinder bore choke is standard for defensive use. At its price point, the 940 Pro Tactical competes directly with the Beretta 1301 Tactical and Benelli M2 Tactical — and in reliability testing, it keeps pace with both.
Mossberg 940 Pro Field: The Hunting Configuration
The 940 Pro Field comes in 26” and 28” barrel configurations with a ventilated rib, fiber optic front bead, and Mossberg’s Accu-Choke system with an extended choke included. The action is the same self-regulating gas system as the Tactical, making it equally capable of cycling light upland loads and heavy waterfowl steel in the same hunt without adjustment. Available in black synthetic and Mossy Oak Bottomland camo. For hunters who want one semi-auto shotgun that moves from dove fields to duck blinds to turkey woods without changing anything but the choke and ammunition, the 940 Pro Field handles all three reliably.
Mossberg 940 Pro JM Pro: Jerry Miculek’s Competition Build
The 940 JM Pro was developed in collaboration with competitive shooting legend Jerry Miculek and is optimized for 3-gun and practical shotgun competition. It ships with a ported 24” barrel, enlarged loading port, extended mag tube, fiber optic sight, and an oversized bolt release and safety for fast manipulation under match conditions. The action is pre-tuned for light competition loads. For competitive shooters who want a factory gun that’s ready to run at a match without gunsmithing, the JM Pro is the most accessible entry point in its class. It’s also an excellent choice for experienced hunters who want competition-level speed in the field.
940 Pro Reliability: What to Expect
The 940 Pro series requires a break-in period — Mossberg recommends 50–100 rounds of standard or high-velocity loads before running light target ammunition or subsonic loads. During break-in, stick to standard 1-1/8 oz. or heavier loads. After break-in, the self-regulating gas system handles the full range. Early production 940 Pro models (2021–2022) had some reported cycling issues that Mossberg addressed with updated components — guns produced after mid-2022 reflect these improvements. If you purchased an early example and have cycling concerns, Mossberg’s customer service has been responsive in addressing warranty issues. Current production guns have a strong reliability track record across all configurations.
