IWB Holsters

Inside the waistband (IWB) holsters are the most widely used concealed carry holsters — worn between the body and the waistband of pants or shorts, they keep the firearm close to the body for maximum concealment under a cover garment. Impact Guns carries IWB holsters in Kydex, leather, and hybrid configurations from Safariland, Alien Gear, Vedder, and other leading manufacturers for all major carry pistols.

IWB vs. OWB: Choosing Your Carry Position

IWB holsters ride inside the waistband, placing the firearm against the body under a cover garment. This provides better concealment than outside the waistband (OWB) carry — the gun profile doesn't print through clothing as readily. The tradeoff is comfort: IWB carry requires a slightly larger waistband (most carriers go 1 size up in pants) and puts the holster in direct contact with the body. OWB holsters are more comfortable for extended wear and faster to draw from, but require a longer cover garment to conceal effectively. For most everyday concealed carriers, IWB is the standard. For open carry, range use, and duty, OWB is preferred. See our OWB holsters page for outside-the-waistband options.

Kydex vs. Leather vs. Hybrid IWB Holsters

Kydex holsters are thermoformed polymer — rigid, precise, and molded to a specific firearm model. They provide consistent retention, protect the trigger guard completely, and are unaffected by sweat and moisture. Kydex is the preferred material for appendix carry (AIWB) and most serious concealed carry applications. Leather holsters break in to the firearm and the wearer's body over time, eventually providing a comfortable custom fit. They breathe better than Kydex against skin but can collapse when the firearm is drawn, making re-holstering one-handed difficult. Hybrid holsters (leather or foam backing with a Kydex shell) aim to combine Kydex's trigger protection with leather's comfort. The Alien Gear Cloak Tuck is the benchmark hybrid IWB. For most modern pistols and serious carry, Kydex is the practical recommendation.

Appendix Carry (AIWB) vs. 3–4 O'Clock Carry

IWB holsters are worn at different positions around the waistband. Appendix carry (AIWB) positions the holster at 12–1 o'clock in front of the hip — faster to draw, easier to access seated, and more concealable with the right holster and pistol. AIWB has become the dominant concealed carry position for serious carriers. 3–4 o'clock carry positions the holster at the hip — more traditional, comfortable for many body types, and preferred by shooters transitioning from duty carry. The right position depends on your body type, clothing, and how you move. Many carriers try both positions before settling on a preference.

Retention and Cant Adjustability

Quality IWB holsters offer adjustable retention (how firmly the holster grips the firearm) and cant (the angle at which the holster rides). Retention should be set so the firearm stays securely in the holster through vigorous movement but releases cleanly on a deliberate draw stroke. Cant adjustment allows forward or rearward tilt of the holster — forward cant (FBI cant) rotates the grip rearward for easier access under a cover garment, particularly for 3–4 o'clock carry. For AIWB, most carriers prefer minimal cant or slight muzzle-rearward cant.

Top IWB Holster Brands

Safariland produces the most trusted professional IWB holsters — their Incog and Species series are used by law enforcement and serious civilian carriers. Alien Gear is the most popular hybrid IWB brand — their Cloak Tuck 3.5 provides an affordable entry into quality carry holsters. Vedder makes highly regarded Kydex IWB holsters at competitive prices with extensive fit options. For the full selection, see our Safariland brand page and our complete holsters page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most comfortable IWB holster?
Comfort is highly individual — body type, carry position, and pistol size all affect it. Generally, hybrid holsters (Alien Gear Cloak Tuck) are the most comfortable for all-day wear for new carriers. Kydex holsters with a padded backing (Vedder ComfortTuck) bridge the gap. For AIWB carry, a purpose-built AIWB holster with a wing claw attachment for better concealment is both comfortable and more concealable than a basic IWB.

How do I prevent IWB holster hotspots?
Hotspots (pressure points from the holster against the body) are reduced by proper ride height adjustment, adding a backing pad to bare Kydex holsters, and distributing the weight with a quality gun belt. A dedicated gun belt is essential for IWB carry — a standard dress belt will sag and shift, causing both discomfort and concealment issues.

Does Impact Guns carry IWB holsters?
Yes. Impact Guns carries IWB holsters for all major carry pistols including Glock, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, and Springfield Armory at our Ogden and Boise stores and ships nationwide. See our full holsters page for the complete selection.
