Glock Generation 6
Glock’s Generation 6 lineup represents the most significant update to the platform since Gen4 — and the first time Glock has shipped flat-faced triggers, aggressive RTF6 grip texturing, and factory optics-ready slides as standard across the entire lineup. The G17 Gen6, G19 Gen6, G45 Gen6, and G49 Gen6 are available now, featuring Glock’s new nDLC finish, updated internal components, and the optics-ready MOS system integrated directly into the slide without a separate adapter plate. If you’ve been running a Gen5 and wondering when to upgrade, Gen6 is the answer.

What’s New in Glock Generation 6
Gen6 introduces several meaningful upgrades over the Gen5. The flat-faced trigger is the most immediately noticeable change — it provides more consistent finger placement across different hand sizes and produces a more linear feel throughout the pull. The RTF6 (Rough Texture Frame) grip texturing is significantly more aggressive than Gen5’s grip surface, improving purchase in wet or high-stress conditions without requiring aftermarket stippling. The nDLC (nano Diamond-Like Carbon) finish on the slide is harder and more corrosion-resistant than Gen5’s nPVD coating. The MOS optics system has been updated with a new direct-mount system that eliminates the separate adapter plates required in earlier MOS generations.
Gen6 Model Lineup: G17, G19, G45, and G49
The initial Gen6 rollout covers Glock’s core 9mm lineup. The G17 Gen6 is the full-size service pistol with a 4.49” barrel and 17-round magazine — the same dimensions as every previous G17, now with all Gen6 enhancements. The G19 Gen6 compact at 4.02” barrel remains the most popular configuration in the lineup. The G45 Gen6 crossover combines the G19 slide with a full-size G17 frame for maximum capacity with a more compact slide profile. The G49 Gen6 extends the crossover concept to a longslide configuration. All four are available with fixed sights or the updated MOS optics-ready slide.
The Updated MOS System: Direct Mount Optics
Gen6 brings the most significant update to Glock’s MOS (Modular Optic System) since its introduction. Earlier MOS generations required adapter plates to accommodate different red dot footprints, which introduced a potential point of movement and added height over bore. The Gen6 MOS slide features a new direct-cut system that accommodates RMR, Shield RMSc, Holosun 507K, and other popular footprints without adapter plates — the optic mounts directly to the slide. This reduces mounting height, eliminates adapter-related loosening, and simplifies the installation process. For shooters running carry optics, the Gen6 MOS is the cleanest factory mounting solution Glock has ever produced.
RTF6 Grip: Aggressive Texture Without Stippling
The RTF6 grip texture on Gen6 pistols is a return to the aggressive texturing that Glock experimented with on limited RTF2 models years ago — but refined and applied across the standard production lineup. The texture is sharp enough to maintain purchase under sweaty hands, rain, or gloves without requiring aftermarket stippling or grip tape. For duty and carry use where a secure grip under stress matters, the RTF6 significantly outperforms the Gen5’s more modest texture. For range shooters running high round counts, the texture can be aggressive on bare skin during extended sessions — shooting gloves or grip sleeves are a reasonable consideration for competition use.
Gen6 vs. Gen5: Should You Upgrade?
The honest answer depends on how you use your Glock. If you’re running a Gen5 with an aftermarket flat trigger, stippled grip, and a slide-cut for optics, you’ve already replicated most of what Gen6 delivers — the upgrade math probably doesn’t work in your favor. If you’re buying new, Gen6 is the obvious choice: you get the flat trigger, RTF6 texture, improved MOS, and nDLC finish as standard without any additional investment. For Gen4 owners, the jump to Gen6 is substantial — the trigger, finish, and optics system are all meaningfully better. For duty carriers and new buyers, Gen6 is simply the best production Glock ever made.
