FN SCAR 17

The FN SCAR 17S is the semi-automatic civilian version of the battle-proven SCAR-H, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and built to the same specification as the rifles fielded by U.S. Special Operations Forces. A short-stroke gas piston operating system, side-folding adjustable stock, and free-float Picatinny rail system deliver the reliability and accuracy of a military-grade battle rifle in a package that performs equally well at the range and in the field.

7.62x51mm NATO Platform

The SCAR 17S is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Winchester), a full-power rifle cartridge with significantly more energy and longer effective range than the 5.56x45mm in the SCAR 16S. The 7.62 cartridge makes the SCAR 17S well-suited for longer-range precision work, hunting, and applications where terminal performance matters past 300 yards. The standard 16-inch barrel produces excellent velocity while keeping the overall package reasonably compact for a .308 platform.

Gas Piston Operating System

Unlike direct impingement AR platforms, the SCAR 17S uses a short-stroke gas piston that keeps combustion gases and carbon out of the receiver. The result is a rifle that runs cleaner under sustained fire and is more tolerant of suppressor use and adverse conditions. The gas regulator is fully adjustable to accommodate different ammunition types and suppressor configurations. This is the same operating principle FN supplies to the U.S. military, refined for the civilian semi-automatic platform.

Folding Stock and Ergonomics

The SCAR 17S’s side-folding stock collapses to the right side of the receiver for transport and storage, reducing overall length significantly without requiring stock removal. The stock adjusts for both length of pull and cheek weld height—useful for different body types and optic heights. Ambidextrous controls include the charging handle, safety, and magazine release. The polymer upper receiver keeps weight manageable for a full-power .308 platform.

Optics and Rail System

The free-float Picatinny top rail runs the full length of the receiver and handguard, with additional rail sections at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions for accessories. The SCAR 17S is popular with LPVO setups in the 1–6x or 1–8x range, which take full advantage of the rifle’s accuracy at distance while maintaining close-range capability. The flat top design accommodates virtually any optic mount without modification.

SCAR 17S vs. SCAR 16S

The SCAR 16S is chambered in 5.56x45mm—lighter, higher capacity, and more affordable to feed. The SCAR 17S gives up some capacity and adds weight but delivers significantly more energy at range. 5.56 makes sense for most range and defensive applications; 7.62 makes sense when range, barrier penetration, or hunting is the priority. Many serious SCAR owners eventually own both.
