FN Reflex vs. FN 509 Compact: Choosing Your FN Carry Gun
The FN 509 Compact is FN’s compact carry pistol—a 15-round, 3.7” barrel platform that sits between the full-size 509 and the micro-compact segment. The Reflex is smaller in every dimension: shorter barrel, slimmer frame, lower capacity, lighter weight. The 509 Compact is the better choice for shooters who prioritize capacity and shootability for range or home defense use alongside carry. The Reflex is for shooters who prioritize concealability and minimal printing above all else, and for whom 11+1 is adequate capacity for daily carry. Both are built to FN’s military and law enforcement quality standards.
The Sub-1” Frame
The FN Reflex’s frame width under one inch places it in the same dimensional category as the SIG P365, Springfield Hellcat, and similar micro-compacts. At this width, the pistol disappears under a t-shirt in appendix carry and produces minimal printing even in lighter clothing. The tradeoff is grip width—the narrow frame requires a more deliberate grip for shooters with larger hands, and recoil management is more dependent on technique than on the pistol’s mass absorbing the impulse. For experienced shooters who practice regularly, the narrower grip is manageable. For new shooters, the slightly wider 509 Compact is easier to shoot well.
Optics and the Shield RMSc Mount
The FN Reflex ships with a slide cut for the Shield RMSc footprint—the same micro red dot standard used by the Hellcat, P365, and other leading micro-compacts. Shield SMSc, Holosun 507K, and Trijicon RMRcc are all compatible. A factory-optics-ready slide at the Reflex’s price point is now expected in the micro-compact segment, and FN delivers it without an aftermarket cut. The low-profile optics mount keeps overall height manageable for carry without a red dot if preferred.
Ambidextrous Manual Safety
The FN Reflex ships with a frame-mounted ambidextrous manual thumb safety as standard—a feature some carry buyers specifically prefer for an additional layer of security in a micro-compact with a short trigger pull. The safety is positive in feel and disengages cleanly with the firing grip thumb. FN also produces no-safety variants for buyers who prefer a pure striker-fired manual of arms.
