EXPS3 vs. EXPS2: What’s the Difference?

The EXPS3 and EXPS2 share the same housing and side-battery design, with one critical difference: the EXPS3 is NVG-compatible, adding lower brightness settings that work with night vision devices. The EXPS2 covers standard daylight and low-light use without NVG compatibility. For civilian shooters who don’t own night vision equipment, the EXPS2 performs identically at a lower price. For law enforcement, military, or civilians with night vision who want a single optic covering both standard and NV-assisted shooting, the EXPS3 is the correct choice. Both accept the G33 magnifier and use the same QD mount.

EXPS3 Reticle Options: Single-Dot vs. Two-Dot

The EXPS3 is available in two reticle configurations. The EXPS3-0 features the standard 68 MOA ring with a single 1 MOA center dot — the most popular configuration for general-purpose use. The EXPS3-2 adds a second aiming dot below the center dot, providing a holdover reference point for longer-range shots without removing your eye from the sight. For 3-Gun competitors, military users engaging targets at varied distances, and law enforcement snipers using the EXPS3 as a backup, the two-dot reticle is a meaningful advantage. For most defensive and duty use inside 200 yards, the single-dot EXPS3-0 is the standard choice.

EXPS3 + G33 Magnifier: The Complete Setup

The EXPS3 is specifically designed to work with EOTech’s G33 3x magnifier in a flip-to-side configuration. The G33 mounts directly behind the EXPS3 on the rail and flips to the right when not needed, giving you true 1x holographic CQB capability and 3x magnified shooting capability from a single optic package. The G33 is compatible with the EXPS3’s side-battery design — it doesn’t block battery access and sits in the optimal eye-relief position. This EXPS3/G33 combination is one of the most common setups on military and law enforcement patrol rifles, and one of the most competitive 3-Gun open division configurations.

EXPS3 Mount: QD Lever and Return-to-Zero

The EXPS3 ships with EOTech’s quick-detach lever mount, which uses a single lever to lock and unlock the optic from a Picatinny rail without tools. The mount is engineered to return to zero when reattached — important for suppressors, training configurations, or any setup where the optic is frequently removed. The EXPS3 sits at a lower height over bore than many competing holographic sights, reducing the offset between line of sight and point of impact at close range. The mount height is compatible with standard AR-15 stocks in the cheek-weld position and most aftermarket stocks.

EOTech EXPS3 Battery Life: Managing CR123A Consumption

The EXPS3 runs on two CR123A batteries providing approximately 600 hours of runtime at setting 12 (nominal brightness). This is significantly shorter than LED-based red dots — an inherent tradeoff of holographic technology. EOTech includes an auto-off feature at 4 and 8 hours to prevent accidental drain. For duty and defensive rifles, the standard practice is scheduled battery replacement every 30–60 days regardless of hours used.
