Caliber Options: Matching the Little Badger to Your Use Case
The .22 LR Little Badger is the most affordable and widely used configuration—ammunition is inexpensive and universally available, making it practical for extended trips or survival use. The .22 Magnum delivers more velocity and energy from the same package, appropriate for small game hunting where a clean kill matters. The .17 HMR offers flat-shooting performance for varminting at longer distances where the .22 LR trajectory becomes a limitation. The .22 Hornet is the centerfire option—a legitimate small-caliber deer and varmint cartridge in a package still under 3 lbs. For a general-purpose survival or pack rifle, .22 LR. For a dedicated hunting configuration, .22 Hornet.
The Folding Design: How It Works
The Little Badger folds by breaking open the action (as with any break-action shotgun or rifle), rotating the barrel downward past 90 degrees until it lies parallel to the stock, then folding the wire skeleton stock alongside the barrel. The entire assembly locks into a compact package under 17” that fits in a backpack side pocket, under a vehicle seat, or in a bug-out bag alongside other gear. Unfolding and loading takes under 15 seconds. The exposed hammer single-action design means there are no buttons or switches to manipulate in the dark—fold out the stock, open the action, load the round, close the action, cock the hammer, fire.
Picatinny Rail and Optics
The Little Badger’s Picatinny rail accepts any standard scope or red dot in appropriate ring mounts. For a .22 LR survival application, iron sights or a simple red dot are appropriate. For the .22 Hornet hunting configuration, a compact 2x–4x scope extends the practical hunting range significantly. The rail is positioned for a standard eye relief optic rather than a scout-mount forward position, so standard pistol-length eye relief scopes and red dots are the correct choice. The lightweight nature of the rifle means avoiding heavy optics that would compromise the packable character that makes the Little Badger useful.
Little Badger vs. Henry Survival Rifle and Similar Platforms
The Chiappa Little Badger competes primarily with the Henry AR-7 survival rifle and similar ultra-compact designs. The key differences: the Little Badger is a single-shot break-action (simpler, more reliable, but slower to reload) versus the AR-7’s semi-automatic action.
