Beretta 92X
The Beretta 92X is the modern evolution of the legendary M9—the 92 series pistol reengineered for 21st-century shooters with an optics-ready slide, a VERTEC-style straight-grip frame, a flared magazine well, and a skeletonized hammer. Available in Full Size, Compact, and Performance variants, the 92X retains the 92FS’s legendary reliability and the open-slide design that has made the platform a fixture in law enforcement and military service for over 40 years. For shooters who want the M9’s proven action with a mounting rail, optics cut, and ergonomic updates, the 92X is the current-production answer.

92X vs. 92FS: What Changed and What Stayed the Same
The Beretta 92FS and 92X share the same rotating barrel, open-slide locking block action that has made the platform trusted for over four decades. The 92X updates everything around it: a VERTEC-style grip frame with a more upright backstrap for better trigger reach, a Picatinny rail for light and laser mounting, a flared magazine well for faster reloads, a skeletonized hammer for a cleaner look and slightly faster lock time, and in the Performance and RDO variants, a factory-milled slide for direct red dot mounting. The 92FS remains in production as a traditional-configuration option; the 92X is the right choice for shooters who want the same action with modern duty features.
92X Full Size vs. 92X Compact: Which Configuration?
The 92X Full Size runs a 4.7-inch barrel with a 17-round magazine—identical grip length to the 92FS it replaces. The 92X Compact steps down to a 4.25-inch barrel with a 13-round flush magazine, while still accepting full-size 15 and 17-round magazines for home defense or range use. The Compact’s grip is still large by subcompact standards—this is not a pocket pistol—but it conceals more comfortably under a light garment than the full-size frame. For duty use, competition, or home defense, the Full Size delivers a longer sight radius and full magazine capacity. For carry use where concealment matters, the Compact is the practical choice.
92X Performance and 92X RDO: Competition and Optics Variants
Beretta’s 92X Performance is built for USPSA Production Division and similar competition formats: a skeletonized steel hammer, a competition-tuned trigger, checkered front strap, Vertec grip frame, and steel frame for added weight and reduced muzzle rise. The 92X RDO (Ready for Red Dot Optic) adds a factory-milled slide compatible with the Trijicon RMR and similar footprints without sacrificing the open-slide design’s legendary dust and debris resistance. For competition shooters who want to run a red dot on an M9-derived platform with minimal modification, the RDO is the most direct path. Both variants accept standard 92-series magazines and all 92X accessories.
92X vs. SIG P226 vs. CZ 75: Full-Size DA/SA Comparison
The Beretta 92X, SIG P226, and CZ 75 represent three of the most established full-size DA/SA pistols in the market. The P226 uses an internal locking system with a shorter overall length at comparable barrel size. The CZ 75 uses a locking block similar to the Beretta but with a more ergonomic grip angle for many shooters and a lower bore axis. The Beretta 92X’s open-slide design is the most distinctive: it reduces felt recoil by exposing more of the barrel during cycling and has proven resistance to dust and debris in field conditions. Each platform has a strong competition and duty pedigree; choice often comes down to hand fit and whether the shooter values the Beretta’s open-slide reliability heritage.
92X Holsters, Magazines, and Accessories
The Beretta 92X uses the same magazines as the 92FS, meaning decades of aftermarket magazine support is directly applicable—Mec-Gar 17-round and 18-round flush-fit magazines, Wilson Combat 17-round options, and standard Beretta 15-round compact magazines all work across the 92 series. Holster support for the 92X is extensive: Safariland, Alien Gear, Blackhawk, and Beretta’s own CX4 Storm pattern all produce 92-family holsters. For the RDO variant, Safariland’s optic-compatible RDS holster lineup covers the footprint without modification. Night sights from Trijicon, Meprolight, and Beretta factory options fit all 92-series models.
